 Badminton Superstar Resting |
|
When you are a badminton superstar, it is good to get away from the crowd for a moment to find some rest. It can be rest or composing yourself for the next match. Who will say, who knows, except Elke Biesbrouck, the player in this photo. In a busy overpopulated sports hall there are several ways to find rest. You can go and lay down somewhere and close your eyes. You can plug in your portable music machine and hence shield your hearing from the world. Elke goes in sits in the middle of the hall, in between a couple of courts and distances herself from the crowd in doing so. And this guy was sitting some metres away from her with his big lens.
Wanneer je een badminton superstar bent, is het een goede zaak om je af en toe eens te distantiëren van de massa voor een poosje om wat rust te vinden. Dat kan rusten zijn of mentale voorbereiding voor de volgende match. Alleen Elke Biesbrouck, de speelster in deze foto, zelf weet hier natuurlijk wat de ware toedracht van dit moment is. In een overbevolkte sportzaal zijn er verschillende manieren om rust te vinden. Je kan ergens gaan liggen met je ogen toe. Je kan je iPod of aanverwanten in je oren stoppen en je zo afsluiten van de wereld. Elke gaat gewoon in het midden van de sportzaal zitten, ergens tussen een paar terreinen, en neemt zo afstand van de rest van de wereld. En deze fotograaf zat toevallig een paar meter verder met zijn grote lens.

I noticed a lot of pretty young people when I was walking around in Oxford. Most of them are dressed in a standard manner, but some of them try to stick out in the crowd.
Ik merkte veel mooie jonge mensen op toen ik in Oxford rondliep. De meeste ervan zijn op een 'normale' manier gekleed, maar enkelen proberen uit te blinken.

| Christ Church Quadrangle |
|
The Christ Church main quadrangle, known as Tom Quad, is the biggest in Oxford. The tower giving entrance to the quad was designed by Christopher Wren. Not the only thing he designed in Oxford, but I'll get back to that later. Everything is big in Christ Church, it being the largest college, hosting the most students. Currently it hosts some 450 undergraduates and 150 graduate students.
De belangrijkste binnenplaats in Christ Church College, die bekend staat als Tom Quad, is de grootste in Oxford. De toren die toegang geeft tot de binnenplek werd door architect Christopher Wren ontworpen, bekend van Saint Pauls Cathedral in Londen. Dit is niet het enige bouwwerk in Oxford dat door Christopher Wren ontworpen werd, maar daar kom ik nog op terug. Alles is groot in Christ Church, het is ook het grootste college met de meeste studenten. Vandaag vinden 450 kandidaat bachelors en 150 kandidaat masters er onderdak.

A famous mathematics tutor at Christ Church College was Charles Dodgson. Doesn’t ring a bell? What about Lewis Carroll, his pseudonym, the author of Alice in Wonderland? He taught at Christ Church from 1855 till 1881, having studied there himself. There he befriended Alice Pleasance Liddell, the daughter of the dean of the college. She became his source of inspiration for his book. Not only Alice inspired him, but also a lot of the objects in the hall of the college. When you look in detail at this one glass window in the hall, you can see a lot of the figures that play a part in the book. Alice herself with her flamingo is in the top left window. The guards of the fireplace were an inspiration for the long neck Alice acquires somewhere in the book. And so you see how a fantasy writer can be inspired by his environment.
Een beroemde wiskundeleraar in Christ Church College was Charles Dodgson. Dat zegt je niets? En Lewis Carroll, dan, zijn pseudoniem, of de geestelijke vader en auteur van Alice in Wonderland? Hij studeerde zelf aan Christ Church en gaf er aansluitend les van 1855 tot 1881. Tijdens die periode ontstond een vriendschap met Alice Pleasance Lidell, de dochter van het hoofd van het college. Ze werd zijn muze, ze inspireerde zijn boek. Maar hij vond ook inspiratie in de objecten die hem omringden in de hal van het college. Wanneer je naar het detail kijkt onderaan dit glasraam van de hal, zie je heel wat figuren die in zijn boek voorkomen. In het linker boven gedeelte van het glasraam zie je Alice zelf met haar flamingo. De wachters van deze openhaard inspireerden de lange nek die Alice ergens in het verhaal oploopt. En zo zie je hoe een sprookjesauteur geïnspireerd wordt door zijn omgeving.

| Christ Church College – Hogwarts Hall |

Most halls are awesome, but you must really visit the one at Christ Church College. Why? It was used as the hall in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films. As of the third film they reconstructed the hall in a studio environment. But Harry Potter isn’t the only reason this college is famous, we’ll come back on this hall later.
De meeste college hallen zijn indrukwekkend, maar die van Christ Church College moet je echt bezoeken. Waarom? Het werd gebruik als de hall in Zweinsteins Hogeschool voor Hekserij en Hocus-Pocus in de eerste twee Harry Potter films. Vanaf de derde film werd de hall gereconstrueerd in een studio omgeving. Maar Harry Potter is niet de enige reden waarom dit college zo beroemd is, ik kom hier later nog op terug.

| Oxford – Turn the Clock Back 50 years |
|
Tradition seems very important in Oxford. What you see in the Harry Potter films is inspired on Oxford college life as it is still lived today. These are students in the hall at lunchtime in the first college I visited: Balliol, the oldest college in Oxford, founded in 1263. Visitors are not allowed in the hall during lunchtime, but I managed to take this shot through the open door.
Traditie lijkt nog heel belangrijk in Oxford. Wat je in de Harry Potter films te zien krijgt is geïnspireerd op het leven in Oxford colleges zoals het vandaag nog geleefd wordt. Dit zijn studenten tijdens lunchtijd in het eerste college dat ik bezocht: Balliol. Tevens het oudste college in Oxford, gesticht in 1263. Bezoekers mogen er niet in tijdens lunchtijd, maar ik kon deze foto via de geopende deur maken.

| Provincial Badminton Violence |

My regular visitors may remember that I have posted some pictures under the label “Badminton Violence” here before. Now rest assured, there is no violence in the Belgian badminton scene, I just try and make photos that give you that impression. Like this one. Poor Steffy is down on the floor, and it looks like as if Steve and Marlies are saying: ‘One down, one to go’. I like it how Steve and Marlies have the same little victory gesture, the raised fist. And as Marlies is a lefty their action is mirrored.
I won’t be posting until the weekend now as I’m off on a little trip.
Mijn trouwe bezoekers herinneren zich misschien dat ik hier eerder foto’s postte onder de noemer “Badminton Violence”. Om je gerust te stellen: er is geen geweld op de Belgische badminton scène, hoor, ik probeer alleen foto’s te maken die je die indruk geven. Zoals deze, afgelopen weekeinde op de provinciale kampioenschappen. Arme Steffy ligt op de grond en het oogt alsof Steve en Marlies denken: ‘Eén neer, nog één te gaan’. Leuk hoe Steve en Marlies dezelfde overwinnings geste tonen: het opgeheven vuistje. En gezien Marlies links speelt, zijn ze precies elkaars spiegelbeeld.
Het zal hier stil zijn tot aan het weekeinde, ik vertrek voor enkele dagen.

A slightly bigger girl that th one I introduced you to yesterday. She played very strong during the provincial championships. Played the final in ladies singles. Came third in ladies doubles A partnering with Charlot Philips (Marlies is B1). I've featured Marlies here before in her polka dot T-shirt, here she is wearing her provincial selection shirt. She is a great player. Congrats with your good run during the provincial Championships, Marlies!
Een ietwat groter meisje dat diegene die ik hier gisteren voorstelde. Ze speelde heel sterd tijdens de provinciale kampioenschappen. Ze speelde de finale in dames enkel. Kwam samen met Charlot Philips derde in dames dubbel en dit in A, terwijl Marlies B1 is. Ik heb Marlies hier al eerder neergezet in haar bolletjes T-shirt. Hier draagt ze haar T van de procinciale selectie. Marlies is een sterke speelster. Proficiat met jouw schitterende prestaties op de provinciale kampioenschappen, Marlies!

I've featured Lotte Derudder here twice before on my blog, but this is the first action photo. I have this feeling that a lot more photos will follow. Lotte is just 10 years old, and yesteday she played the final in the lowest category of our provinicial badminton championships. Now that is a big deal for a little 10 year old.
Lotte zag je al twee keer eerder hier op mijn blog. Dit is de eerste actiefoto. Maar ik weet dat er nog veel foto's zullen volgen. Lotte is 10 en speelde gisteren de finale in het D-klassement van de provinciale kampioenscahppen. Dat is toch heel wat voor een 10 jarige. Proficiat, Lotte! Misschien toch ook even vertellen dat ze een getalenteerde broer heeft. Hij won de finale bij de heren.

When in Diest we walked around the citadel. Unfortunately it was not open to the public. But the woods surrounding the structure offered some interesting photo oppotunities as well.
In Diest wandelden we rond de citadel. Jammer genoeg was het niet open voor het publiek. Maar het omringende bos bood een aantal interessante foto gelegenheden.

| Street Beguinage |

Diest's beguinage is a street beguinage. Meaning that it is not concentrated round a square like the one in Brugge, it is not walled all the way round, is is just a section of streets really, a neighborhood if you like. But without a shadow of a doubt: it is very pretty.
Diest's begijnhof is een straten begijnhof. Het is dus niet rond een gazon geconcentreerd zoals die in Brugge en het is ook niet ommuurd. Het is gewoon een omgeving rond een aantal straten, een wijk, eigenlijk. Maar geen twijfel: het is een heel mooi begijnhof.

Continuing in the atmosphere of Halloween, I visited the fair Belgian city of Diest yesterday. The church in the Beguinage has some perculiar wood carvings.
Verder in de sfeer van Halloween, bezocht ik gisteren de mooie stad Diest. De kerk in het begijnhof heeft wat bijzondere houtsnijwerkjes.

Chocolatier Corné really did his best to decorate his shop window for Halloween. Not such a great photo as I was forced to take it through the window, and I couldn't keep a distance because of the crowd. But I think it looks tasty anyway.
Chocolatier Corné deed zijn best om zijn vitrine mooi te versieren voor Halloween. De foto is niet zo goed. Ik moest door het raam fotograferen en ik kon geen afstand nemen, te veel volk. Maar het ziet er toch smakelijk uit, niet?

You could see them from afar in my first photo in this little series about the yearly kite festival in Oostende, but I wanted to get them from up close as well. I purposely left out the huge kites that are holding these tails up, it adds to the mystery of the shot.
Je kon deze al zien van ver af in mijn eerste foto in deze reeks over het jaarlijkse kite festival in Oostende. Maar ik wou ze ook nog eens van dichtbij fotograferen. Ik heb de grote kites die deze staarten ophouden bewust niet meegenomen in de compositie, dat maakt de foto nog mysterieuzer.

Went to see an international tournament a couple of weeks ago, my favorite ladies volleyball team was playing: Hermes Oostende. Nymphe Verrelst, number 5, looked in great shape to me.
Een week of twee terug ging ik voor mijn favoriete dames volleybalploeg, Hermes Oostende, supporteren op een internationaal toernooi. Nymphe Verrelst, nummer 5, zette haar beste beentje voor.

The colourful construction I showed you yesterday, I actually noticed it from my office space high up on the 11th floor. Obviously I had to walk to the arts mountain in Brussels to take a picture of it. While I was there I took another one of this glass house forming the entry to the lower laying exhibition halls.
De kleurrijke constructie die ik jullie gisteren toonde, ik merkte het voor de eerste keer op van in mijn kantoorruimte hoog op de 11e verdieping in hartje Brussel. Natuurlijk moest ik naar de kunstberg in Brussel wandelen om er een foto van te maken. Terwijl ik er toch was heb ik ook een foto van dit glazen huis gemaakt die de toegang tot de lager gelegen expositie hallen vormt.

Europalia is back in Brussels. Chinese artist Gu Wenda wants to cover world landmark buildings all over the world with his typical Chinese lanterns. It is another way is getting art out of the museum to a larger public. The lantern is a symbol of the Chinese culture that is found everywhere in Chinese dayly life. It symbolizes happiness, prosperity and feast. In this form of art Gu Wenda underlines the cultural differences between his country and the rest of the world, he questions conflicts, influences and assimilation.
Europalia is terug in Brussel. Chinese artiest Gu Wenda wil de wereld rond prominente gebouwen bekleden met zijn typische Chinese lantaarns. Het is terug een goede manier om kunst uit het muzeum te krijgen en aan een groter publiek aan te bieden. De lantaarn is een symbool van de Chinese cultuur die in China deel uitmaakt van het dagelijkse leven. Het staat symbool voor geluk, voorspoed en feest. Via deze vorm van kunst onderstreept Bu Wenda de culturele verschillen tussen zijn land en de rest van de wereld. Hij stelt conflict, beïnvloeding en assimilatie in vraag.

Trust me to get it wrong. Ah, yes, the dress code was gothic. Yes... My trousers are darkish... The problem is that I told my wife I was going to a boring meeting. No dear, don't join me, you'll be bored to tears. And then this goth girl turned up. How am I going to think up an excuse for this one?
Je kan er op rekenen dat ik het verkeerd verstaan heb. De subcultuur was dus gothic. Aha. Mijn broek is toch aan de donkere kant? En nu nog een ander probleem. Ik vertelde mijn vrouw dat ik naar een vervelende vergadering ging. Neen, schat, je zou beter niet mee gaan, het zal je snel vervelen. En dan was dit goth meisje er. Welke uitvlucht kan ik hier voor verzinnen. Aan de fotograaf: bedankt, hé zeg!
