The cemetery in Stirling attracts a lot of visitors thanks to its good location high above the surrounding grounds with a good view on the river Forth. The site is considered a celebration to the establisment of Presbyterianism in Schotland.

Het kerkhof in Stirling is heel aantrekkelijk omwille van de hoge ligging die een goed zicht biedt om de lager gelegen gronden, met inbegrip van de rivier Forth. De site wordt aanzien als een viering van Presbyterianisme in Schotland.

Scotsmen in Stirling seem to have a sense of humor when it comes to naming their establishments. Love the sky in this shot.

Schotten in Stirling hebben precies een gevoel voor humor wanneer ze een naam kiezen voor hun etablissementen. Deze foto nam ik voor de mooie lucht.

This is the old town hall of Bredene, a seaside resort 10 km from Oostende.

Dit is het oude gemeentehuis van Bredene, een kustgemeente op 10km van Oostende.

You don't find large hotels in Scotlands smaller cities. This last hotel we stayed at made us laugh because Adamo is a well known singer. The small hotel was very comfortable, except for the single glazing. It is situated along side a busy road. The restaurant was very nice as well offering traditional and exotic food.

In de kleinere steden in Schotland vind je geen grote hotels. Dit laatste hotel waar wij verbleven deed ons lachen omwille van de naam. Adamo is natuurlijk een bekende zanger. Het kleine hotel was heel comfortabel, alleen jammer van de enkele beglazing. Het lag aan een drukke straat. Het restaurant bood lekkere traditionele en exotische gerechten.

Stirling has played an important role in Scotlands's history. Quite a few battles have taken place there. The city is known as the gateway to the Highlands. I quite liked this church and was offered a great cloudy background on this warm and sunny day in April 2010.

Stirling heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld in Schotland's geschiedenis. Veel veldslagen werden er uitgevochten. De stad staat bekend als de poort tot de hooglanden. Ik vond deze kerk best fotogeniek en was heel tevreden met de mooie wolkjes in de lucht. Een warme zonnige dag in april 2010.

I've been driving past this place for years. Drove to the back a couple of weeks ago to take a photo. Funny how these kind of derelict places remain without change.

Ik rijd al jaren voorbij dit gebouwtje. Een paar weken terug ging ik naar de achterkant om een foto te maken. Grappig hoe die verlaten bouwvallige plaatsen onaangeraakt blijven. Nochtans in het midden van een druk commercieel centrum.

I can actually see the facade of Brussels Central Station from the platform where I work. We don't have offices anymore, just open spaces. The roof of the parking tower across the street is no longer used for parking, solar pannels. Things evolve.

Ik kan de gevel van het Brusselse Centraal Station zien van op het plateau waar ik werk. Wij hebben al een tijdje geen kantoortjes meer, alleen open plekken. Het dak van de parkeertoren aan de overkant van de straat wordt niet meer gebruikt om te parkeren, zonnepanelen. Evolutie...

Dit moet een feest zijn voor gotic en celtic liefhebbers: de begraafplaats van de clan MacNab in het kleine en mooie dorpje Killin. Je vindt het ergens tussen Glencoe en Stirling. Je mag de begraafplaats bezoeken op eigen risico.

Our holiday destination for this summer has been decided. We will be revisiting Scotland. My wife and I had another destination in mind at first, but the kids decided they wanted to see Scotland. I don't mind, it is a great place.
We won't be revisiting Eilean Donnan Castle here in the picture, we saw that back in 2010. But we will be visiting Castle Urquhart along the bank of Loch Ness.

Onze vakantiebestemming voor deze zomer ligt vast. Wij gaan Schotland herbezoeken. Mijn vrouw en ik hadden een andere bestemming in gedachten, maar mijn kinderen beslisten dat zij Schotland wilden bezoeken. Ik heb daar niets op tegen, het is een fantastisch land.
Wij gaan Eilean Donnan Castle, hier in de foto, niet opnieuw bezoeken. Wij kwamen er al in 2010. Deze keer bezoeken wij Urquhart Castle langsheen de oever van Loch Ness.

Alternatively visiting a castle can be nice as well. This is Castle De Blankaart in Woumen near Diksmuide. You can start some great nature walks from there.

Je kan ook een kasteel bezoeken. Dit is Kasteel De Blankaart in Woumen nabij Dikwmuide. Het is het startpunt van enkele mooie natuurwandelingen.

Of course a walk in a city can also be fun and provide you with good photos. This is another one of those great shop facades that I saw in Maastricht.

Natuurlijk kan een stadswandeling ook leuk zijn en je goede foto's opleveren. Nog een van die fantastische winkelgevels die ik in Maastricht kon bewonderen.

Hell's Gate in Maastricht dates from 1229 and is the oldest standing city gate in the Netherlands.

De Helpoort in Maatricht dateert van 1229 en is de oudst overblijvende stadspoort in Nederland.

When I was making the panorama photo of the Vrijthof, I noticed this interesting looking building in the far corner. It attracted me, I had to go closer to see. I thought I may have been a temple of worship. In fact it houses the post office & telegraphy.

Toen ik de pano foto van het Vrijthof aan het maken was, viel mijn ook op dit interessante gebouw in de verste hoek. Het trok mij aan, ik moest van dichter gaan zien. Ik dacht eerst dat het een gebedshuis zou zijn. Het bleek het post- en telegraafkantoor te zijn.

The Vrijthof is a square in the centre of Maastricht. The church in the left of the composition with the red tower is the Saint John's Church. To the richt the Saint Servaas Basilica. And so on, so many great buildings to see on this square.

Het Vrijthof is een plein in het centrum van Maastricht. De kerk links in de compositie met de rode toren is de Sint Janskerk. Rechts daarvan de Sint Servaas Basiliek. En zo voort, je ontdekt er heel wat mooie en interessante gebouwen.

In the heart of Maastricht you'll find the Bisschop's watermill. It has been there since the 7th century and it is still a working watermill today. It has a bakery attached, you can enjoy the fine bread and other products all day long.

In het hartje van Maatricht vin dje de Bisschopsmolen. Deze watermolen staat er al sinds de 7e eeuw en het is nog steeds een werkende watermolen. Aanliggend vind je een bakkerij. Je kan er van het lekkere brood en andere producten zoals vlaaien genieten. De ganse dag lang.

I was in Maastricht in The Netherlands last week-end. A bridge I have wanted to photograph for some years now is the stone 13th century Sint Servaas Bridge in Maastricht. Maastricht is a very nice city, I'll be showing you some photos of my visit this week.

Vorig weekeinde was ik in Maastricht, net over de grens in Nederland. Een brug die ik altijd al heb willen fotograferen is de stenen 13de eeuwse Sint Servaas Brug. Maastricht is een heel mooie stad, ik toon jullie wat beelden van mijn bezoek deze week.

Washington square in NYC, an oasis of rest for the NYU students in Greenwitch Village. I don't know what the building is called, but it looks quite nice to me. Lots of particular buildings surrounding this green lung in the heart of Manhattan. The Christmas tree under the arch shows where 5th avenue begins.

Washington square in NYC, een oase van rust voor de studenten van de New Yorkse Universiteit in Greenwitch Village. Ik weet niet welk gebouw dat pecies is, maar ik vind het een knappe constructie. Veel unieke gebouwen omzomen deze groene long in hartje Manhattan. De kerstboom onder de boog geeft het begin van 5th avenue aan.

This last shot of the NYC library I took in the evening. The surrounding modern buildings make the composition more interesting I find.

Deze laatste foto van de NYC bibliotheek maakte ik 's avonds. De omringende moderne gebouwen maken de compositie interessanter vind ik.

I discovered that when you climb one of the marble staircases in the NYC library, you can take some interesting shots. Like this one looking out.

Ik ontdekte dat wanneer je de marmeren trappen beklimt in de NYC bibliotheek, je enkele interessante foto's kunt nemen. Zoals deze doorkijk.

When you walk in to the New York City Public Library, you feel like you are a couple of pairs of eyes short. Looking up pays off.

Wanneer je in de New York City Openbare Bibliotheek binnenwandelt voel je je alsof je ogen tekort komt. Het loont de moeite om naar boven te kijken.

Walking back from the Bull Ring, on the way to the cathedral, I discovered another little gallery in Birmingham. This is typical of the covered markets that just about every large self respecting town in the UK can take pride in.

Terug wandelend van de Bull Ring, op weg naar de cathedraal, ontdekte ik nog een kleine galerij in Birmingham. Dit is een typische Britse overdekte markt zoals je ze in elke zichzelf respecterende stad kan vinden in de UK.

We went in to Waterstones in New Street in Birmingham and found a book temple that is architecturally very interesting as well. This is not the first time that I discover a branch of Waterstones in a unique building. I posted a photo of the Swansea branch here some time ago. The top floor behind the gothic arches held the academic books. My young co-travellers spent quite a length of time there. But then Birmingham is England's second city and it does have a university.

Wij bezochten Waterstones in New Street in Birmingham en ik ontdekte er een boekentempel die op vlak van architectuur ook heel wat te bieden heeft. Dit is niet de eerste keer dat ik een filiaal van Waterstones in een uniek gebouw tref. Een tijd terug postte ik foto's van het filiaal in Swansea. De bovenste verdieping achter de gothische boven huist de afdeling met de academische boeken. Mijn jonge medereizigers brachten er heel wat tijd door. Birmingham is Engeland's tweede stad en het heeft een universiteit.

In Birmingham, England's second city, they know a thing or two about decorative architecture. Here I managed to catch old and new in one picture. To me it is clear which of the two I prefer.

In Birmingham, Engeland's tweede stad, kennen ze iets van decoratieve architectuur. Hier ving ik oud en niew in één foto. Voor mij is het duidelijk welke van de twee ik verkies.

A place I always like to go when I'm in Birmingham is the terrace above Saint Martin's Square. I used my panorama photo feature of my iPhone for the first time up there. Will have to play with that again. Shame about the weather.

Waar ik steeds graag ga wanneer ik in Birmingham ben is het terras met uitzicht over Saint Martin's Square. Ik gebruikte er voor de eerte keer de panorama foto functionaliteit van mijn iPhone. Moet dat vast nog eens gebruiken. Jammer van het weer.

Not all parts of New York City have skyscrapers. Areas like Greenwich Village, Chinatown and Little Italy have the brick houses and apartements that are not high rises. Walking along Mulberry Street in the direction of Houston Street, I noticed the typical NYC fire escapes. Note the fine decorations on the second metal construction attached to the building.

Niet alle wijken van New York City zijn bezaaid met wolkenkrabbers. Wijken zoals Greenwich Village, Chinatown en Little Italy tellen hoofdzakelijk bakstenen woningen en apartementen, geen hoogbouw. Wandelend langs Mulberry Street in de richting van Houston Street, merkte ik de typische brandladders op. Die in de tweede foto vind ik echt heel mooi gedecoreerd.

This is to the right of yesterday's compositon. New York has so much to offer when you like architecture and art.

Dit is aan de rechterzijde van de compositie van gisteren. New York heeft zo veel te bieden als je van architectuur en kunst houdt.

To end the administrative part of the walk: New York's Courts of Justice. The true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good government.

Om het administratieve gedeelte van de wandeling te beëindigen: het gerechtshof. Een getrouwe toepassing van justitie is de sterkste pilaar van goede bewindsvoering.

Alongside New York’s City Hall, in Central Street, you’ll find the building for the Commission of Landmarks, founded by the mayor in the 60’s after the original Penn Station had been demolished to make room for Madison Square Gardens.  The façade refers to the origin of New York City. In the 17^th century the Dutch founded New Amsterdam on the extreme south tip of Manhattan Island. In 1667 the settlement was renamed New York in honour of the British Duke of York who later became James II when the Brits seized control of Manhattan along with the rest of the Dutch colony.

Om de hoek van New York’s stadhuis, in Central Street, vind je het gebouw voor de Commissie van Monumenten en Gebouwen. Het werd gesticht in de jaren 60 nadat het originele Penn Station afgebroken werd om de sporttempel Madison Square Gardens te bouwen. De geven verwijst naar de oorsprong van de stad. In de 17^e eeuw vestigde de Nederlanders New Amsterdam op het meest zuidelijke gedeelte van het eiland Manhattan. In 1667 werd de vestiging herdoopt tot New York in eer van de Britse graaf van York die later koning James II werd. De Britten hadden dan Manhattan en de rest van de Nederlandse kolonie verroverd.
