The challenge of this week on Aline's blog is cow. So I remembered a while ago when we want for a hike that we encountered this dairy farm where they sold their fresh products. I was smiled at by a very agreeable farm lady and couldn't resist taking a picture of her when she was leading the cows to be milked.

De uitdaging deze week op Aline's blog is koe. Ik herinnerde dat ik een tijdje terug tijdens een wandeling op een boerderij stootte waar ze hun verse producten verkochten. De aangename boerin trakteerde mij op een stralende glimlach en ik kon er niet aan weerstaan haar foto te nemen terwijl ze de koebeesten begeleidde om gemolken te worden.

Een beter kijk op de ruïnes van de originele cathedraal en de kloosterorde van Saint-Davids.

I cannot show you a lot of photos of the beautiful village of Saint-David's. It rained that hard all day, that we gave up trying to enjoy the beautiful environment there. I did take this photo of Saint-David's Cathedral. This is the new cathedral dating from the 1100's. On the far left in the photo the ruins of the previous cathedral dating from some 500 years earlier.

Ik kan niet veel foto's tonen van het prachtige dorpje Saint-David's. Het regende er zo hard de ganse dag, dat wij het opgaven om te proberen van de mooie omgeving te genieten. Tussen de vlagen door wist ik deze foto van de cathedraal te nemen. In de voorgrond het nieuwe gedeelte dat van de jaren 1100 dateert. Ver links in de foto de ruïnes van het oorspronkelijke bouwwerk dat 500 jaar ouder is.

Driving further south from Aberystwyth to Saint-Paul's, you drive along the Irish Sea. This is just one of the spectacular views you are treated to along that winding road.

De route van Aberystwyth naar Saint-Paul's, verder naar het zuiden van Wales, brengt je langsheen de Ierse Zee. Dit is maar één van de spectaculaire vergezichten waarop deze karaktervolle route je trakteert.

I like this action shot a lot, because I just managed to catch the skipper before she touches the ground.

Ik ben gek op deze actiefoto omdat ik er in slaagde van de skipster net te vangen voordat ze terug de grond raakte.

I won't be trying this at home.

Sport is always on the move. A new club in Ropeskipping land is Skip Up, the chairman is a friend. He was in my hometown last Saturday for the Masters qualification. So I went and took some photos of the young talent that he had brought to our fair city.

Sport is altijd in beweging. Een nieuwe club in Ropeskipping land is Skip Up uit Mortsel. De voorzitter is een vriend. Hij bracht zijn jong talent naar mijn thuisstad vorige zaterdag voor de Masters kwalificatie. Ik ging wat foto's maken.

Yesterday brought the première of Spielberg's Tintin film to Brussels. A cinema just across the street from my office building isn the place. Paris and London battled for the première, but as Tintin was Born in Brussels fathered by Belgian artist Hergé, it simply had to be Brussels.

Gisteren ging in Brussel de première van Spielberg's Kuifje film door. De UCG cinema, aan de overkant van de straat van mijn kantoorgebouw, was de plaats. Parijs en Londen vochten voor die première, maar gezien Kuifje in Brussel geboren werd met Hergé als vader, moest het natuurlijk Brussel zijn.

Aberystwyth also offers great sunsets. Obviously, when you visit a seaside town and the weather is great, it leaves a superb impression. The place was pretty deserted, though. We had dinner in a large restaurant where but 3 tables were taken.

Aberystwyth biedt ook fantastische zonsondergangen. Natuurlijk, wanneer je een kuststad bezoekt en het weer fantastisch is, laat dat een bijzondere indruk achter. Deze kuststad was redelijk verlaten, niettegenstaande het augustus was. Wij dineerden in een groot restaurant waar amper 3 tafels bezet waren.

Not just the seafront architecture in Aberystwyth is worthwhile appreciating, in the town centre you come across some pearls as well. I liked this row of houses. The post office still referring to the queen seems rather unique as well. And last but not least, the front of this pharmacy, that also host a museum, displays the clock mechanism of the original clock tower of Aberysthwyth. The original clock tower was demolished in 1855 by a powerful Welsh family to make way for their personal development plans.

Niet alleen de zeedijk architectuur in Aberystwyth is de moeite waard, in het stadscentrum vind je ook pareltjes. Zoals deze decoratieve huizenrij. Het postkantoor verwijst nog naar de koningin. En tot slot deze gevel van een apotekerij. Je vindt in hetzelfde gebouw een museum, waar het mechanisme van de oude stadsklok terug tot leven gebracht werd. Dit nadat een machige Welsche familie de originele kloktoren liet afbreken om ruimte te maken voor hun persoonlijke ontwikkelingsplannen.

As I said, the university is next to the castle ruins. So here an impressing of that pretty site.

Zoals ik meldde: je vindt de universiteitssite naast de kasteelruïnes. Hierbij een indruk van de verzorgde ruïnesite.

A closer look at the university site with a tower of the castle ruins in the foreground. The far site of the university is in need of renovation. I don't know if this site is still in use, the main campus is now in a more modern building somewhere more at the edge of the town. The near tower has a couple of nice decorative mozaics in need of repair as well.

Een betere kijk op het universiteitsgebouw met een toren van de kasteelruine in de voorgrond. Het verste gedeelte van het universiteitsgebouw kan renovatie gebruiken. Ik weet niet of dit gebouw nog veel gebruikt wordt. De hoofdcampus bevindt zich nu in een moderner gebouw aan de rand van het stadje. De toren het dichtst bij draagt enkele mooie mozaïeken die ook nood aan herstelling hebben.

The original main site of Aberystwyth University sits on the seafront, next to the castle ruins. It was founded in the mid 1850's when a small group of patriots purchased the unfinished Castle Hotel. This forms a unique part of the varied Aberystwyth seafont, separated by the more commercial site by the pier.

De originele hoofdsite van de Universiteit van Aberystwyth vind je op de zeedijk, net naast de kasteelruïne. De universiteit werd opgericht rond 1850 door een kleine groep vaderlandslievenden die het onafgewerkte Castle Hotel kochten. De site vorm een uniek gedeelte van de gevarieerde kustlijn van deze stand, afgezonderd van het meer commerciële gedeelte door de pier.

One thing you can say about the seaside town of Aberstythwyth, it is a very clean environment. Not a spec of dirt anywhere. And clean symmetric façades, with nice looking women showing up here and there to make the photos more interesting.

Wat je zeker van de badstad Aberstythwyth kan zeggen: het is er een propere omgeving. Geen vuiltje aan de lucht of op de grond. En propere symmetrische gevels met knappe vrouwen die hier en daar de foto komen opvrolijken.

Wales has a strong tradition with singing, the Welsh male choirs are appreciated all over the world. But then Wales has the sad reputation of being a poor community dominated by hard labour like the coal mines in the past. So singing is a poor man's way of experiencing culture and a means of maintaining a social life. We failed to attend a male choir as they always seemed to perform on days when we were elsewhere. But in a pavilion along the Aberstythwyth seafront we did come across this mixed choir.

Wales heeft een sterke traditie met zingen. De mannenkoren worden de aardbol rond geapprecieerd. Wales heeft de triestige reputatie een arme streek te zijn gedomineerd door hard werk zoals de kolenmijnen in het verleden. Zingen was een medium voor de arme man om cultuur te beleven en een sociaal leven te onderhouden. Wij slaagden er niet in een optreden van een mannenkoor bij te wonen, ze traden precies altijd op het verkeerde tijdstip of in de verkeerde plaats op. Maar in een paviljoen langs de zeedijk van Aberstythwyth vonden wij dit gemengde koor.

This is the far side of Aberystwyth, away from the city centre, where our hotel was located. As you can see it was pretty calm on the beach, even though it was such a nice day.

Dit is de verste zijde van Aberystwith, weg van het stadscentrum, waar ons hotel zich bevond. Het was kalm op het strand, zelfs al was het een heel mooie dag.

And this is the façade of the hotel, with a pretty Volkswagen in front of it. Bathing in warm sunshine, as you can see. I don't know how you would call this building style, I'm sure my architect friends will help me out. It was a busy place with friendly people.

En dit is dan de façade van het hotel, met een leuke Volkswagen aan de voordeur geparkeerd. Badend in het zonlicht. Weet niet welke bouwstijl dit is, mijn vrienden architecten vertellen het mij wel. Dit was een druk hotel met een vriendelijke bediening.

This is the view that greeted us when we opened the door to our room in the Glengower Hotel in Aberystwith. Two single beds, but they were very comfortable.

Dit is het zicht dat ons toelachte wanneer wij onze kamer binnentraden in de Glengower Hotel in Aberystwith. Enkele bedden, maar zeer comfortabel.

Harlech is a small seaside village in North Wales with, yes, a castle. Unique about this one is it seems to grow organically on the rock it is settled on. We found a nice little terrace overlooking the castle site where you could enjoy a great Welsh cream tea.

Harlech is een klein dorpje aan de zee in Noord Wales, met, jawel, een kasteel. Wat er aan dit kasteel speciaal is is at het precies organisch op de rotsen gegroeid is waar het op staat. Wij vonden een leuk terrasje met zicht op het kasteel waar je een lekkere Welsh cream tea kon verbruiken.

This valley made me think of the terrific trip we took in the Glenncoe valley in Scotland a year and a half before. Great scenery, great nature.

Deze vallei deed mij denken aan de fantastische trip die wij anderhalf jaar voordien maakten in de Glenncoe vallei in Schotland. Fantastische natuur, mooie landschappen.

I came across these two when I was walking about in the Snowdonian fields hunting for photos. They weren't at their ease. I cannot blame them, I treated my sons to some nice juicy cuts of Welsh lamb last Saturday. Not these animals, obviously, I still buy my meat at the butcher's.

Ik ontmoette dit koppel toen ik in de velden van Snowdonia wandelde op jacht naar foto's. Ze waren niet echt op hun gemak met mijn aanwezigheid. Ik kan ze het niet kwalijk nemen, ik trakteerde mijn zoons op enkele lapjes mals en sappig lamsvlees uit Wales vorige zaterdag. Niet deze beesten, ik koop mijn vlees nog steeds bij de beenhouwer.

When I go back to Wales, I will take more time to enjoy Snowdonia. It's natural beauty is not second to Scotland.
Sorry that I haven't been visiting your blogs much the past week, been too busy at work.

Wanneer ik terugga naar Wales, neem ik meer tijd om van Snowdonia te genieten. Het natuurschoon moet niet onder doen voor Schotland.
Het spijt mij dat ik jullie blogs niet veel bezocht de afgelopen week, ik heb het te druk op 't werk.

This schooner also started life as a fishing vessel, herring fishing back in 1916. Dutch owned it now serves as a training and passenger vessel sailing the Channel, the North Sea and the East Sea. It was built for speed. This picture shows you how rough the sea was that day, those boats really rocked. This is a photo from the authentic ships event in Oostende back in May.

Deze schoener starte het leven ook als een visserboot, een haringvisser in 1916. In Nederlandse handen doet ze nu dienst als een opleidings- en passagiersschip die vooral het Kanaal, de Noordzee en de Oostzee bevaart. Dit schip werd gebouwd voor snelheid. Deze foto toont je hoe karaktervol de zee wel was die dag, de neuzen staken diep en rezen hoog. Dit is nog een foto van 'Oostende voor Anker', mei 2011.

Spent the afternoon in my niece's garden last Sunday. Her son's birthday. She has a new dog. When the birthday cake was plated out it started begging in a very cute manner.

Vorige zondag bracht ik de namiddag door in de tuin van mijn nicht. Haar zoontje verjaarde. Ze heeft een nieuwe hond. Nadat de verjaardagstaart aangesneden werd begon de hond op een leuke manier te bedelen.

Just about a week or two ago I visited Toyota's HQ in Brussels. Next to the reception stood a hybrid car. The whole presentation shows that they seek a clean image, the environment is important. The reception area boasted a lot of awards, including this nice piece. I got out my BlackBerry and took a shot.

Zowat een week of twee geleden bezocht ik Toyota's hoofdkwartier in Brussel. Ter hoogde van het onthaal stond een hybride wagen. De uistraling die ze nalaten is er een van zorg voor het milieu. In het wachthoekje stonden ook veel awards, met inbegrip van dit mooie beeldje. Ik waagde mij nog eens aan een BlackBerry foto.

This is the steam locomotive that pushed us up mount Snowdon and pulled us back down. You can see how misty it was near the summit, while on ground level the weather was much better.

Dit is de stoomlocomotief die ons mount Snowdon opduwde en ons terug naar beneden trok. Je ziet duidelijk hoe mistig het was dichtbij de piek, terwijl het weer beneden veel beter was.

If you are wondering: 'Did he walk up Mount Snowdon?', the answer is: 'No'. I took the mountain railway. The summit wasn't much fun, it rained heavily and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face becaus of the mist/cloudsbase. Will have to go back.

Als je je afvroeg: 'Wandelde hij naar de top van de berg Snowdon?', het antwoord is: 'Nee'. Ik nam de bergstoomtrein. De top was niet to leuk, het regende hevig en je kon je hand niet voor je ogen zien door de mist/wolken. Ik moet nog eens teruggaan.
