Old Year's Eve. And this is what the Galleries Saint-Hubert look like this year. Nicely decorated again. Less expensive than some years, more expensive than others. Enjoy Old Year's Eve!

Oudejaarsavond. En zo zien de Sint-Hubertus Galerijen er uit dit jaar. Terug mooi versierd. Minder duur dan sommige vorige jaren, en duurder dan andere. Geniet van Oudejaarsavond!

For once and for all I want to cleanse you of the prejudice that you cannot have a decent meal in England.
If you are prepared to pay the price you can enjoy some delicious specialities on the other side of the Channel.
I chose Marlowes restaurant in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon, about as traditional as it gets.
I was enchanted by the 'Drunken Duck'. Two large pieces of duck breast marinated in gin, red wine, cracked black pepper and juniper berries. Served with roasted celeriac and dressed with a sauce made from the marinade.

Ik wil jullie verlossen van het vooroordeel dat je niet lekker kan tafelen in Engeland.
Als je bereid bent de prijs te belaten kan je genieten van lekkere specialiteiten aan de andere kant van het Kanaal.

Ik viel in de ban van de 'Drunken Duck' (dronken eend). Twee grote stukken eendeborst gemarineerd in gin, rode wijn, gemalen zwarte peper en jeneverbessen. Opgediend met geroosterde knolselder en in een sausje gemaakt van de marinade.

The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is home to the Royal Shakespeare Company, supported by the British Royal Family. We went to see The Heart of Robin Hood by David Farr, a spectacular family production. This edifice holds two theatres, the original Swan Theatre at the back and the Royal Shakespeare Treatre at the front. Here a view of the side, bordered by the river Avon.

De Royal Shakespeare Theater is de thuisbasis van de Royal Shakespeare Company, een toneelgroep die door de Britse koninklijke familie ondersteund wordt. Wij zagen er Het Hart van Robin Hood door David Farr, een spectaculaire productie voor gans het gezin. Het gebouw telt twe theaterzalen, de originele Swann Theatre aan de achterzijde en de Koninklijke Shakespeare Theater aan de voorzijde. Dit is een kijk op de zijkant, aan de oevers van de rivier Avon.

This big house in Henley Street is believed to be the birthplace of William Shakespeare. His father John practiced his trade as a tanner and glovemaker here. William Shakespeare was baptised on April 26 1564. In those days there were no birth records, but traditionally a child was baptised 3 days after it's birth. This house is just across the street from the Christmas shop that I posted here on Christmas Eve.

Dit grote huis in Henley Street zou de geboorteplaats van William Shakespeare zijn. Zijn vader John beoefende hier zijn stiel van leerlooier en handschoenmaker. William werd op 26 april 1564 gedoopt. In die dagen werden geen registers van geboorte bijgehouden, maar traditioneel liet men zijn kind 3 dagen na de geboorte dopen. Dit huis vind je aan de overkant van de straat van de kerstwinkel die ik hier op kerstavond postte.

So we spent a couple of days in beautiful Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. We stayed in the hotel named after the bard. This is the kind of architecture you find all over in Stratford: wooden constructions with a lot of beams showing.

Wij verbleven enkele dagen in het mooie Stratford-upon-Avon, de geboorteplaats van William Shakespeare. Wij verbleven in het hotel genoemd naar de bard. Dit soort architectuur vind je overal in Stratford: houten huizen met vakwerk.

Saw a great modern version of the nativity scene when visiting my niece on Christmas Day.

Op bezoek bij mijn nichtje op Kerstdag vond ik er een mooie moderne kerststal.

Elke may be good for some emo, but Matijs Dierickx is always good for some spectacular action. I'll have to ask him one day how he manages to keep on hanging in the air even when the shuttle is already being played back by his opponent.

Elke is misschien goed voor emo, Matijs Dierickx is altijd goed voor spectaculaire actie. Ik moet hem ooit eens vragen hoe hij dat doet om zo in de lucht te blijven hangen. Zijn tegenspeler is de pluim hier al aan het terugspelen en hij hangt daar nog.

Oops, late posting today. The strike got me out of bed in the middle of the night to drive to Brussels before traffic froze. On Sunday December 18 I witnessed the Lebad mixed badminton team take their third consecutive win in the mixed competition making it near certain of becoming the Belgian N°1 team. My favorite player Elke Biesbrouck won her singles match sealing the victory for Lebad. It was a pretty emotional moment for Elke, the team, the home crowd. I was in the right place at the right time.

Oeps, ik post een beetje laat vandaag. Door de staking stond ik in het holst van de nacht op om naar Brussel te bollen vooraleer het verkeer vast liep. Op zondag 18 december was ik getuige van de derde overwinning op rij in de gemengde competitie voor Lebad, het West-Vlaamse team uit Heule. Daardoor zijn ze zo goed als zeker van de Belgische titel. Mijn favoriete speelster Elke Biesbrouck won haar enkel en verzilverde zo de match voor Lebad. Een emo moment voor Elke, de ploeg, de supporters. Ik was op de juiste plaats op het juiste moment.

Nothing but admiration for the seamen who park the boat after having sailed in to the port. I'm pretty sure that "Parking" is not the right expression. I have no problem with parking a car, big or small, but this must really be quite something else.

Niets dan bewondering voor de zeemannen die de boot parkeren nadat ze de haven binnen gezeild zijn. Ik weet natuurlijk bijna zo goed als zeker dat "Parkeren" niet de correcte uitdrukking is. Ik heb geen problemen om de wagen te parkeren, klein of groot, maar dit moet echt een ander paar mouwen zijn.

Arriving at Dover's Eastern Docks at 9 in the morning, only one ship lay waiting: P&O. For the rest the mooring stations were empty. You can see Dover Castle behind and above the P&O vessel in the first picture.

Aanvarend in Dover's Eastern Docks op 9u 's morgens, lag er maar 1 schip te wachten: P&O. De overige aanlegsteigers waren bootloos. Hoog boven het P&O vaartuig zie je het kasteel van Dover.

As Seafrance have filed for bancrupcy, we chose DFDS Seaways to cross the Channel from Dunkirk to Dover. Their boats are somewhat more luxurious than Seafrance's vessels and I think they are bigger. Not that a large vessel was needed at this point in time. I counted 15 cars on one side of the car deck, meaning that it was not half full. The other side was completely empty as you can see here.

Gezien Seafrance de boeken neerlegde, kozen wij voor DFDS Seaways om het Kanaal over te steken, van Duinkerke naar Dover. Hun schepen zijn luxueuzer dan die van Seafrance en en denk ook groter. Niet dat een groot schip nodig was wanneer wij overstaken. Ik telde 15 wagens aan de ene zijde van het wagen dek, waardoor het verre van half vol was. De andere zijde was volledig leeg, zoals je hier ziet.

So, we took off on a boat trip again. The weather was beautiful sailing out on Monday December 12th. Seems funny taking a picture of the back end of the boat on a cold Monday morning, but I quite like this shot. Very peaceful somehow.

Dus, wij vertrokken nog maar eens met de boot. Heel mooi weer voor een maandagmorgen op de 12e december. Een foto maken van de achterkant van de boot, lijkt gek op een koude maandagmorgen. Maar ik vind dit een rustig shot.

The day before yesterday brought terrible gale force winds. You can see the sand blowing over the beach, it blows onto the dike and collects there. There was a fear that the dikes would not hold the sea water, so the fire brigade decided to install the mobile wall to stop the water from crossing the top of the dike. Behind this dike lies the lowest area of the town that was often flooded at high tide in the past. They have renewed the dike recently and the beach in front of it is artificial to hold back the water. Surprises me that they need to install a mobile wall now, I would have thought the previous arrangement with the permanent wall was more efficient, less work.

Eergisteren bracht erge rukwinden. Je ziet hoe het losse zand over het strand waait en op de zeedijk verzamelt. Er was vrees dat de dijken het zeewater niet zouden terughouden, dus de brandweer besliste van de mobiele waterkeringsmuur te installeren. Achter deze muur bevindt zich het laagst gelegen gedeelte van de stad dat in het verleden vaak te kampen kreeg met overstromingen. Het verwondert mij dat er nu een mobiele muur geplaatst moet worden. De dijk werd onlangs vernieuwd, voorheen was er een permanente waterkeringsmuur. De nood om nu een mobiele versie te installeren lijkt mij veel werk.

Drama in Belgium while I was away. On December 13th a professional criminal murdered 6 people and wounded more than 130 people on a Christmas market in the Walloon city of Liège. He possessed firearms and grenades. He ended up shooting himself in the head. Motive: unknown. Predictable: according to a criminal psychiatrist, yes. A leading Belgian lawyer finds it regrettable that a known criminal with a long criminal record can remain free after having been picked up for possession of firearms.
I visited Liège back in September 2008, I was there for the world cup table tennis and briefly toured the city in the course of the afternoon. I took this picture of the fountain on the Place Saint Lambert, the place where the repeat offender ended his life and that of others.

Een drama in België terwijl ik in het buitenland was. Op de 13e december vermoordde een professionele gangster 6 mensen en verwondde meer dan 130 mensen op een kerstmarkt in de Waalse stad Luik. Hij was in het bezit van vuurwapens en granaten. Hij beëindigde zijn betreurenswaardige campagne door zichzelf in het hoofd te schieten. Motief: onbekend. Voorspelbaar: wel, volgens een gerechtspsycholoog. Een leidende Belgische advokaat vindt het bedenkelijk dat een gekend crimineel met een lang strafblad op vrije voet kan blijven nadat hij aangehouden werd voor illegaal wapenbezit.
Ik bezocht Luik in september 2008, ik kwam er voor de wereldbeker tafeltennis. Ik profiteerde van die gelegenheid om de stad te bezoeken in de loop van de namiddag. Ik nam er deze foto van de fontein op de Place Saint Lambert, de plaats waar de recidivist zijn leven en dat van anderen beëindigde.

When you read this post, I am just back from a little trip. I did use a more modern means of transport, but I didn't mind this steam train either when I took it last summer. Wooden benches, and I was stung by a bee inside the train, but it is all part of the fun I guess. Where I have been and what I enjoyed: later.

Wanneer je deze post leest, ben ik net terug van een kleine vakantie. Ik gebruikte wat modernere transportmiddelen, maar deze stoomtrein vond ik ook best aangenaam afgelopen zomer. Houten banken in de wagens en ik werd er gestoken door een bij, maar dat maakt allemaal deel uit van de ervaring. Waar ik naartoe ging en wat ik er deed: later.

I got some pretty fun photos of Ella when she played on Sunday December 4th, but I'll stick to this one, it is decent enough to publish. Great action here by Carl Claeyssens. Charlotte Marteel stays low to allow Carl to smash over her, and all Ella can do is duck to avoid getting the shuttlecock between the teeth. Of course she could have lifted her racket blade in a desparate attempt to block the course of the shuttle and hence play it back. I guess she is hoping here that her parter will be able to play it back.

Ik maakte enkele grappige foto's van Ella toen ze op zondag 4 december speelde. Ik beperk mij tot deze, het is deftig genoeg om te publiceren. Super actie van Carl Claeyssens. Charloote Marteel blijft laag zodat Carl over haar heen kan smashen. Al wat Ella kan doen is laag gaan om een mond vol pluimen te vermijden. Ze had natuurlijk ook haar racketblad omhoog kunnen steken om de pluim te blokken en zo terug te spelen. Hier hoop ze hop haar partner om de pluim terug te spelen.

That orange wall in the sports hall in Heule doesn't always make photography easy. But I managed to get Caro Neyrinck in a nice contrast against that wall. Even with the red top.

Die oranje muur in de sporthal in Heule maakt het fotografen niet altijd gemakkelijk. Maar ik slaagde er toch in van Caro Neyrinck in contrast met de muur te krijgen. Zelfs met haar rode polo.

Needed some new tires fitted. Funny to see your car so high up in the air. To kill time after all phone calls are done: use the thing to try and make a decent photo. I quite like the effect.

Had verse banden nodig. Grappig om je wagen zo hoog in de lucht te zien. Om de tijd wat te doden nadat de telefoontjes achter de rug zijn: het ding gebruiken om te proberen een deftige foto te maken. Ik vind dit effect wel leuk.

2 december a national demonstration was held in our capital Brussels. Trade Unions protesting against the new government's plans to improve the country's financial situation. Some reflecton in the window as I took it from the coffee corner at work on the 12th floor.

De nationale demontratie van 2 december in Brussel. De vakbonden riepen op om te protesteren tegen de maatregelen van de nieuwe regering met een financiële impact. Heb dit door het raam van de coffee corner op 't werk moeten maken op de twaalfde verdieping, dus toch wat reflectie.

I'm not really a product photographer, you can clearly see that in this photo. I could say a lot of bad things about this shot. But I won't. I purchased my machine earlier this year and became a member of the club. You cannot buy the capsules for the machines in the stores here in Belgium. There are a few brand stores in the major cities. I order my stuff online. Enough to last me more than 6 months and to have a choice of flavours.

Ik ben duidelijk geen product fotograaf, dat vertelt deze foto. Ik zou veel slechte dingen kunnen zeggen over deze foto. Maar dat doe ik niet. Ik kocht mijn machine eerder dit jaar en werd lid van de club. Je kan de kapsules nog niet vrij in de winkels kopen. Het merk heeft een paar eigen winkels in België, in de grote steden. Ik bestel mijn waar online. Steeds genoeg om 6 maanden keuze qua smaken te hebben.

Another tradition with the Hermes girls is that they thank the helpers, like the ball girls and the court sweepers after they have greeted the opponents at the net. This must be these little girls dream to hi five with the volleyball players they dream of becoming. Eline David in the first photo and coach Erwin Mares in the second.

Nog een traditie met de Hermes meisjes is dat ze de medewerkers bedanken zoals de ballen meisjes en de baan schoonmakers. Uiteraard nadat ze de tegenstanders aan het net begroet hebben. Voor de kleine meisjes moet het een droom zijn om te hi fiven met de volleybalsters die dromen te worden. Eline David in de eerste foto en coach Erwin Mares in de tweede.

I got some good action shots of the libero too, Julie Vermander. She is the smallest player on the team and for a libero being closer to the ground is an advantage. As you can see here, great footwork! She is closely watched by N° 5 Nymphe Verrelst here.

Ik maakte enkele goede actiefoto's van Julie Vermander, de libero. Zij is de kleinste speelster in het team en voor een libero is het interessant om dichter bij de grond te zijn. Je ziet duidelijk waaromin deze foto, mooi voetenwerk! Ze wordt hier nauwgelet gevolgd door Nr. 5 Nymphe Verrelst.

This action shot I took towards the end of the match, the end of the fifth game. I know because I'm taking it from behind the match table, Filip's flowered shirt figures in the left bottom of the composition. I moved to that position in the hall because it is the best place to take pictures after the match.

Deze actiefoto nam ik naar het einde van de match toe, op het einde van de vijfde set. Ik neem ze van achter de wedstrijdtafel, je ziet Filip's bloemetjeshemd links beneden i de compositie. Ik koos die plek in de zaal omdat ze het interessantste is om mooie foto's te nemen na afloop van de match.

Eline op de bank zodat Julie, de libero, kan invallen. Wanneer je team goed aan het spelen is, zit je natuurlijk niet stil.

Anja Van Damme & Nymphe Verrelst shot from side court in the air. You don't get to see their face in these shots and you could accuse me of shooting legs and bottoms. I just like the power of these shots and I choose the frog perspective to enhance the 'off the ground' effect.

Anja Van Damme en Nymphe Verrelst, foto's genomen aan de zijkant van de baan. Natuurlijk zie je hier hun gezichtjes niet en je zou mij kunnen beschuldigen van benen en kontjesfotografie. Vooral de power die uit deze foto's straalt spreekt mij aan. Ik kies voor een kikvostperspectief om het 'hoog van de grond' effect kracht bij te zetten.

Not just the girls were happy about winning the match, their house photographer was pretty pleased as well.
Someone asked me how many photos I take during a match like that. I checked. I was shooting exactly 3 hours, the duration of the match, a part of the warming up included. I took 1226 photos. That is nearly 7 photos per minute. Interesting, I had no idea.

Niet alleen de meisjes waren gelukkig met hun overwinning, hun huisfotograaf leek ook redelijk in de wolken.
Iemand vroeg mij hoeveel foto's ik maak tijdens zo'n match. Ik fotografeerde exact 3 uren, de duur van de match plus een stuk van de opwarming. Ik maakte 1226 foto's. Dat is dus bijna 7 foto's per minuut. Interessant, ik had daar zelf geen idee van.

I know your are not allowed to take pictures in Belgian stations without written permission. So I hope I won't be sent to jail here. There is a lot to do on the internet these days about photos taken and processed on smartphones, in particular Steve's iThing. I have a lot of iStuff but no iPhone. I still use BlackBerry. I may be old fashioned, but I think I'll stick to photography with traditional equipment. Even though you can get some unique effects with a smart phone camera.

Ik weet dat je geen foto's mag maken in een Belgisch station zonder schriftelijke toestemming. Ik hoop dat ik nu dus niet de gevangenis in vlieg. Deze dagen vind je op het internet overal artikels over foto's die gemaakt en afgewerkt worden op smartphones. Vooral Steve's iDinges. Ik heb heel wat iDingen, maar geen iPhone. Ik gebruik nog steeds BlackBerry. Misschien ben ik ouderwets, maar ik denk dat ik verder doe met fotografie met een eerder traditionele uitrusting. Alhoewel je soms unieke speciale effecten kan bekomen meteen smartphone.
