A typical phenomenon in the UK is the covered market. You don't really find them over here in Belgium. At least: I can hardly think of any. Unless you'd consider our galleries as a form of this tradesmanship. But then the concept is quite different. The galleries are a covered street with separate shops, where a covered market like this one in Gravesend works with stalls. Rather messy and not at all photogenetic on the inside, but monumental on the outside. The 1268 date refers to when the Gravesend market was chartered. In 1568 Queen Elisabeth I granted a second charter.

Een typisch fenomeen in de UK is de overdekte markt. Je vind ze hier niet echt in België. Ten minste: ik ken er geen. Tenzij je onze galerijen als een vorm van deze kleinhandel zou beschouwen. Maar het concept is toch anders. Een galerij is een overdekte winkelstraat, terwijl een overdekte markt zoals deze met standjes werkt. Nogal choatisch aan de binnenkant en weinig fotogeniek, maar monumentaal aan de buitenzijde. De datum 1268 verwijst naar de eerste vergunning voor het houden van een markt. 300 jaar later in 1568 verleende Koningin Elisabeth I een nieuwe vergunning.

Over the centuries, nations have always felt the need to protect their cities and ports. No different along the river Thames. Walking along the bank in Gravensend, I came across an open air museum hosting several generations of conflict hardware in order to protect the city of London further upstream.

Over de eeuwen heen, hebben naties altijd de nood gekend om hun havens en steden te beschermen. Hier langsheen de oevers van de Theems is dat ook merkbaar. In Gravesend wandelde ik langs een open lucht museum met oorlogstuig van verschillende generaties. Doel: Londen verder stroomopwaarts beschermen.

Not just ships on the Thames @ Gravesend. I walked down a jetty to get a better shot at something and this flock of swans likely thought I was going to feed them. They swam towards me at great pace.

Niet enkel schepen op de Theems @ Gravesend. Ik wandelde over een aanlegsteiger die de rivier in stak om een beter shot van iets te kunnen maken. Deze zwerm kwam aan hoge snelheid naar mij toe gezwommen. Wellicht dachten ze dat ik mijn boterhammen met ze wou delen.

A completely different vessel moored the other side of the river is the cruise Ship Marco Polo. An old searot contructed in the 60's, it cruises to South-America during wintertime, the Mediterranean in summertime, for a British Operator. Een heel ander vaartuig, gelegen aan de andere zijde van de rivier is het cruiseschip Marco Polo. Een oude zeerot die in de jaren 60 gebouwd werd. In de winter vaart dit schip op Zuid-Amerika, in de zomer verzorgt het cruises in het Middellandse Zeegebied. Dit voor een britse operator. The port of London is a giant organisation. Amazing what kind of traffic it handles. It was a cold and sunny afternoon and I walked along the bank of the river Thames. Seeing this gigantic container ship sail by, I found it hard to imagine the gallion mooring with the dying or dead princess Pocahontas on board. I checked the route of this container ship, it sails between London and Montevideo, South America. When I was writhing this post on Sunday the 22nd, it was sailing up the coas of south America back on it's way to London.

De haven van Londen is een grote organisatie. Indrukwekkend wat voor traffiek het beheert. Op deze koude en zonnige namiddag wandelde ik langsheen de oever van de Thames. Kijkend naar deze zeereus, vond ik het moeilijk mij voor te stellen hoe de gallioen aanmeerde om de gestorven of stervende princes aan wal te brengen.
Ik checkte de vaarroute van dit containership: het vaart tussen Londen en Montevideo in Zuid-Amerika. Toen ik deze post aan het schrijven was op zondag 22 januari, bevond het schip zich langsheen de kust van Zuid-Amerika op de terugweg naar Londen.

I visited Gravesend, a town when you leave the London circular on the way back to Dover, because I had read that 'Princess' Pocahontas was burried there. Matoaka is Pocahontas's real name. Pocahontas is her pet name from when she was a little girl. In 1616 her British colonial husband brought her to London to be presented to the king's court. She was, after all, a princess, being the daughter of a indian chief. Ze became ill during her short stay in England, and sailing back to her home land, the ship moored at Gravesend to bring the dying or dead princess ashore. She was only 22. As she was a princess, she was burried in the vault beneath the chancel of the parish church, a place reserved for clergy and notable parishioners. A statue of the princess stands in front of the church to remember her by.

Ik bezocht Gravesend, een stadje net wanneer je de Londense ring verlaten hebt, omdat 'Prinses' Pocahontas er begraven ligt. Matoaka is de echte naam van Pocahontas. Pocahontas is haar troetelnaam van toen ze een klein meisje was. In 1616 bracht haar Britse kolonist echtgenoot haar naar Londen om haar aan haar aan het koningshuis voor te stellen. Als dochter van het stamhoofd was zij immers een prinses. Ze werd onwel in Engeland, en op de terugweg van Londen naar haar thuisland, meerde het schip aan in Gravesend om de stervende of reeds gestorven Pocahontas aan wal te brengen. Ze was dan amper 22 jaar. Gezien haar aanzien als prinses kreeg ze een rustplaats in de gewelven onder het koor van de parochiekerk. Er prijkt een beeld ter nagedachtenis aan de voorzijde van de kerk.

The sad news came that the New Year's dip could not take place again, this is the second time our town tried to organize it this month. We've just been having too bad weather. With the strong wind, it is too difficult to guarantee the safety of the participants. So I need to illustrate this with some photos I took during one of the previous editions. You can see the crowd scattered on the beach getting ready for the dip in the first photo. The girl in the second photo merits my admiration. She has just come out of the water and she needs nothing to keep her warm but her bathing costume and a can of soft drink. A bit of a contrast with the last photo, in particular the young woman with the fur hat. Better luck next year.

Afgelopen weekeinde het triestige nieuws dat de nieuwjaarsduik definitief afgelast wordt. Dit was de tweede keer dat Oostende de duik probeerde te organiseren deze maand. Gewoon te slecht weer. Door de sterke wind kan de veiligheid van de deelnemers moeilijk gegarandeerd worden. Dit moet ik dit bericht illustreren met enkele foto's die ik tijdens een vorige editie nam. In de eerste foto zie je de deelnemers die zich voorbereiden op het strand. Bewondering voor het meisje in de tweede foto. Ze komt net uit het water en heeft niets nodig om warm te krijgen, buiten haar badpak en haar blikje fris. Een scherp contrast met de deelnemers in de derde foto, in het bijzonder de jonge vrouw met haar bontmuts. Volgend jaar meer geluk, hoop ik.

The Old Bank in Stratford-upon-Avon was not yet doing business in William Shakespeare's time. It was established in 1810. But the facade is ornamented with scenes from the bard's plays. And above the entrance you'll find a mosaic depicting the bard. So you should really go and see this magnificent building yourself when in Stratford. The Old Bank in Stratford-upon-Avon was er niet in de tijd van William Shakespeare. Het werd er gevestigd in 1810. Maar de facade is versierd met taferelen uit de toneelstukken van de bard. En boven de ingang prijkt een mozaiek met zijn afbeelding. Je moet dus gaan kijken als je in Stratford zou zijn. Hier mee ga ik mijn overzichtsreportage van Stratford stoppen. Another large beautiful house with a big garden in Stratford-upon-Avon is Hall's Croft. The residence on the edge of Stratford that belonged to Doctor Hall and Susanna Shakespeare, William's eldest child. The house is just around the corner from the Holy Trinity Church where William lies burried.

Nog een groot en mooi huis met een grote tuin in Stratford-upon-Avond is Hall's Croft. Deze residentie aan de rand van het oude Stratford was het eigendom van dokter Hall en Susanna Shakespeare, de oudste dochter van de bard. Het huis bevindt zich net om de hoek van de Kerk van de Heilige Drievuldigheid, waar William zijn laatste rustplaats heeft.

Some people make an effort to look good, colourful. And then again, not.

Sommige mensen doen een inspanning om er kleurrijk uit te zien. En dan ook weer niet.

The beams are the giveaway in the comparison between these two houses. The Costa coffee store is the replica, dating from the early 1900's. The White Stuff clothes store is the authentic house dating from the 1600's. The beams in the authentic house are less straight as sawing techniques were much less refined back then. Also the beams sag more, as they have carried the weight for 300 centuries longer than in the replica.

De balken verraden dat de Costa coffee shop de replica is. Dit huis dateert van de vroege jaren 1900. De balken in de White Stuff klerenwinkel zijn minder recht gezaagd omdat zaagtechnieken nog niet zo verfijnd waren heel vroeger. De horizontale balken buigen ook meer door omdat ze het gewicht van het huis zo'n 300 jaar langer moeten dragen dan bij de replica.

I love it when I can collect photos of a badminton family. I have already highlighted Remi Leman and his big sister Mathilde Leman and so today the missing sibling in the middle: Suzanne Leman. Maybe I should try and get their father before my lens now. Suzanne played at the KW Cup in her own club and I managed to get a shot of her face after she had hit a misser as well.

Ik houd er van om foto's van badminton families te verzamelen. Nog niet zo lang geleden zette ik hier Remi Leman en zijn grote zus Mathilde Leman in de verf. Vandaag is het de beurt aan het zusje tussen de twee: Suzanne Leman. Misschien moet ik nu vader voor de lens krijgen. Suzanne speelde op de KW Cup in eigen club. Ik slaagde er ook in van haar gelaatsuidrukking te vangen nadat ze een misser geslagen had.

Went to a junior tournament yesterday. Terrible lighting in the hall, so my photos are far from top quality. Seeing this young top player at work, made me think of a parallel between badminton or ballet. Some of these young people really move nicely.

Gisteren ging ik nog eens naar een jeugdtoernooi. Vreselijk slechte verlichting in de sporthal, dus mijn foto's zijn allesbehalve topkwaliteit. Toen ik deze jonge speelster aan het werk zag, dacht ik aan een parallel tussen badminton en ballet. Sommige van die jonge mensen bewegen echt heel mooi.

Linking Rosslyn Chapel and the Knights Templar is far from an exact science. The Chapel was founded in the mid 15^th century by William Sinclair, 1^st earl of Caithness. He would be a descendant of Henry Sinclair, who fled France in the 14^th century when the Knights Templar were rounded up and burned at the stake. The order of the Knights Templar were put on trial in Edinburgh in 1309 and the family Sinclair denied all liaisons with the order. William Sinclair, the founder of the chapel was believed to be a grandmaster of the Scottish stonemasons. A later William Sinclair became grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. The Freemasons are believed to have originated from the order of the Knights Templar.
When I visited Rosslyn Chapel back in 2010 the place was still surrounded by scaffolding undergoing renovation. The picture shows how meticulously this was being done. I will have to go back now the works have been completed.

Een verband leggen tussen de kapel in Roslin en de Orde van de Tempeliers is verre van een exacte wetenschap. De kapel werd opgericht halverwege de 15^e eeuw door William Sinclair, de eerste graaf van Caithness. Hij was een afstammeling van Henry Sinclair, die Frankrijk ontvluchtte in de 14^e eeuw toen de Tempeliers er tot bekentenissen gemarteld werden en vervolgens tot de brandstapel veroordeeld werden. Toen ik in 2010 de kapel in Roslin bezocht stond het ding in de steigers om een grondige renovatie te ondergaan. De foto toont hoe precies daarbij tewerk gegaan werd. Nu de renovatie afgelopen is moet ik zeker nog eens terug gaan.

 Did you ever think about the origin of the superstition surrounding Friday the 13th? There are many possible explanations that find their origin in art and literature, but the one that I like best is linked to the order of the Knights Templar. By order of the Roman Catholic Pope the Knights Templar were rounded up tortured and burned at the stake in France on Friday October 13^th 1307. So that was certainly an unlucky day for them. Not all perished. It seems about half of the order’s members sailed from La Rochelle, seeking sanctuary in Portugal and Scotland. Some claim that a group of Templars sailed on to Iceland and Greenland and went on to discover America, a century before Chistopher Columbus is reputed to have done. I like the link with Scotland, a country I visited back in 2010. You can find this Celtic cross in Stirling’s cemetery.

Dacht je ooit na over het ontstaan van het bijgeloof rond vrijdag de 13e? Nazicht levert veel mogelijke verklaringen die hun oorsprong in kunst en literatuur vinden, maar ik verkies de uitleg die gekoppeld is aan de orde van de Tempeliers. In 1307 werden de Tempeliers in Frankrijk massaal gemarteld en op vrijdag de 13^e oktober op de brandstapel gezet. Een geluksdag was het dus niet bepaald voor hen. Niet alle Tempeliers lieten er het leven, ongeveer de helft zou kunnen vluchten zijn via een zeemacht dat van uit La Rochelle zeilde richting Portugal en Schotland. Een groep Tempeliers zou via Ijsland en Groenland naar Amerika getrokken zijn. Dus ontdekten ze zo het nieuwe continent zo wat 100 jaar vooraleer Kristoffel Columbus er voet aan wal zette. Ik hou wel van de link met Schotland, een land dat ik in 2010 voor de eerste keer bezocht. Dit Keltische kruis vind je in de begraafplaats van het stadje Stirling. De moeite waard om te bezoeken.

Something went wrong with yesterday's post here. Was having some trouble with the internet at home last weekend. Harvard house in Stratford-upon-Avon, for a short time home to minister (priest) John Harvard. It is the house with the flagpole. We are talking 1607-1638, so he may have known William Shakespeare. John crossed the ocean to settle in New England. Himself an educated Cambridge man, he found schooling important. So he left some money so that Harvard College could be founded in New England. He did not actually found the school as some would have you believe.

Iets liep verkeerd met mijn geplande post gisteren. Ik had wat problemen met het internet thuis afgelopen weekeinde, had moeten controleren. Harvard House in Stratford-upon-Avon, voor een korte tijd de thuis van John Harvard. Het huis met de vlaggenmast. Priester John Harvard leefde tussen 1607 en 1638, dus hij kan William Shakespeare gekend hebben. Hij stak de oceaan over om zich in New England te vestigen. Zelf een product van een Cambrige opleiding, vond hij educatie belangrijk. Op het einde van zijn leven liet hij wat geld achter zodat Harvard College opgericht kon worden in New England. Hij is dus zelf niet de oprichter zoals sommigen beweren.

In front of the Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre, you'll find a unique collection of canal boats. There is a restaurant, an ice cream parlour and this is a sandwich boat. Apart from these commercially exploited barges, you can also rent a canal boat to sail the Bard's ring. A round trip that you can hurry through in a week if you are prepare to sail 8 to 9 hours per day, or do it in two weeks and enjoy all the sites you sail by. In the old days canals were the best way to ship goods from industrial centres, like Birmingham, to the rest of the country. You can even sail up to Llangollen, my first stop in Wales last summer. In the bottom left of the canal map, Brecon, the last place I visited in Wales. But I haven't found the time to show you any pictures of that last place yet.

Aan de voorzijde van de Royal Shakespeare Company Theatre, vind je een unieke verzameling van kanaalboten. Eén er van doet dienst als restaurant, er is ook een ijssalon en dit is de broodjesboot. Naast deze commercieel uitgebate berges, kan je er ook huren om, onder andere, de ring van de bard af te varen. Deze rondvaart kan je in een week doen als je bereid bent om 8 à 9 uren per dag te varen. Twee weken tijd geeft je echter de mogelijkheid om alle bezienswaardigheden rustig te bezoeken. Vroeger waren de kanalen natuurlijk het transportmiddel bij uitstek om goederen van de industriële steden, zoals Birmingham, naar de rest van het land te vervoeren. Via dit netwerk kan je zelfs naar Llangollen varen, de eerste plek die ik afgelopen zomer in Wales bezocht. Links onder in het kanaalplan vind je Brecon, de laatste plek die ik in Wales bezocht. Maar ik vond nog niet de tijd om jullie een fotootje van die plek te tonen.

Standing with my back to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre I took this photo of the footbridge crossing the river Avon. Now at first sight you might think this is a road bridge as it looks like there are cars on it. The cars are in fact on a bridge further down. I have a second picture that I can show you, taken when I was crossing the foot bridge. Originally this bridge was used for a tramline.

Dit is een foto van de voetgangersbrug over de rivier Avon. Achter mij ligt het Royal Shakespeare Theater. In deze foto zou je denken dat er auto's over de voetbrug rijden, maar die gebruiken de verder gelegen brug. De tweede foto maakte ik terwijl in de brug over wandelde. Origineel reed er een trammetje over deze brug.

This is the rear of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the original Swan Theatre. A few days ago my newspaper treated me to a top 20 of buildings to see in the world and this one was rated as number 11. The half oval shape of the theatre makes it unique. Didn't realize this when I visited this site.

Dit is de achterzijde van de Royal Shakespeare Theatre, de originele Swan Theatre. Enkele dagen geleden trakteerde mijn krant mij op een top 20 van de gebouwen die je moet zien in de wereld. Dit bouwwerk stond op nummer 11. Vooral de theaterzaal in halve ovaal-vorm maakt het de moeite waard. Ik besefte dit nog niet toen ik deze site bezocht halverwege december.

The Guild Chapel is attached to the King Edward VI School, so is the place where William Shakespeare would have come to say his prairs and seek spiritual guidance. This Chapel is know to have been errected before 1296. You can see on the top part of the wall where the paintings were whitewashed around 1559 by order of William's father John, who was the head of the guild then. He respected the royal injunction that called for all superstition and idolatry to be removed from places of worship.

De Guild Chapel is verbonden met de King Edward VI school. Dit is de plek waar William Shakespeare zijn gebeden kwam zeggen en naar religieuze begeleiding kwam zoeken. Geweten is dat deze kapel ergens voor 1296 opgericht werd. In het bovenste gedeelte kan je zien waar muurschilderijen overschilderd werden volgens de instructies van John Shakespeare, de vader van William, die dan aan het hoofd van de gilde stond. Hij respecteerde het koninklijke bevel dat opriep om alle bijgeloof en symboliek te verwijderen uit gebedsruimtes.

This building, with the chapel at the end, is where William Shakespeare went to school: the King Edward VI School. Amazing, isn't it, it was a school in the 1500's and it still is today.

I had a late meeting on December 30th, so I trained to Brussels just before noontime. Between Brugge and Gent I noticed this beautiful cloud formation. Taking pictures through the glass window of a speeding train is not that good, but I like this.

Ik had een late meeting op 30 december, dus ik nam de trein naar Brussel net voor de middag. Tussen Brugge en Gent merkte ik deze mooie wolken op. Foto's nemen door een raam van een rijdende trein is geen zo'n goed idee, maar ik ben niet ontevreden met het resultaat.

When I arrived in the Horta Gallery connecting to Brussels Central Station around 19:15, I noticed a lot of colourful figures signing in for the 7km Brussels Corrida. A run through the heart of the city passing along the Christmas market and the important attractions of the centre.

Toen ik 's avonds omstreeks 19u15 in de Horta Galerij arriveerde, om door te wandelen naar het Centraal Station, vond ik er een grote groep kleurrijke figuren. Ze tekenden er in voor de Manneke Pis Corrida van 7km. Een looptocht doorheen het standscentrum langsheen de Kerstmarkt op de Grande Place en andere toeristische attracties.
