Margaux heeft er geen probleem mee om model te staan voor de foto van Annick.

This may not be the best photo, but it clearly illustrates what our badminton club is all about: team spirit.
We have achieved this with our teenagers.
Here you see them gathered around the coach. He tells them they have played well and what they need to improve with hard work and training. They like that, they ask for it.

Dit is misschien niet de beste foto, maar het illustreert waar wij naar streven in onze badmintonclub: teamgeest.
Dit hebben wij bekomen met onze tieners.
Je ziet ze hier verzameld bij de coach. Hij vertelt ze dat ze goed gespeeld hebben en geeft feedback over wat ze nog moeten verbeteren via hard werk en training. Daar vragen ze om, het motiveert ze.

When I was walking around in the centre of the City of Bath, I had a feeling I was being watched. I looked up and discovered this peeping dog. He was 3 up.

Selling funny rubbish is part of the English humor. This was a tea pot shop with a young version of the Queen.

Culture is written with a capital C in Bath. Next to the Theatre Royal there is also the Ustinov Studio. With this great work of art on the sobre exterior.

The Theatre Royal in Bath is just over 200 years old. Outside of London, it is one of the more important theatres, seating 900. It is in the centre of the town of Bath and what I like is that at the back there is room for a lawn.

De Theatre Royal in Bath is net iets ouder dan 200 jaar. Buiten Londen is dit een van de belangrijkste theaters die plaats biedt aan 900 bezoekers. Je vindt het in het stadscentrum en toch is er aan de achterkant ruimte voor een gazon.

It is fun looking, but it is not authentic. It is a chain, you find them everywhere. The sweets cost a fortune.

Het ziet er leuk uit, maar het is niet authentiek. Het is een keten, je vindt ze overal. Het snoepgoed kost een fortuin.

Another view of the Great Bath, a fisheye view this time. It gives you a good idea of how big it is. This was constructed later than the rest of the bath house, it is in fact the upper layer of the temple.

Een andere kijk op het Grote Bad, een fisheye kijk deze keer. Het geeft je een goed idee van hoe groot het bad wel is. Het werd later gebouwd dan de rest van het badhuis. Het is het opperste niveau van de tempel.

How did the Romans build their saunas in the bath house? The floor rested on the top of these stacks of stones, leaving a cavity underneath. A fireplace warmed the cavity under the floor. The Romans would enjoy the heat generated by the hot air circulating under the floor. The floor would heat up that much, that they needed sandals with thick soles to be able to walk on it.

You know how saunas have cold water plunge baths you can use after you've enjoyed a good sauna session? This is an enormous plunge bath. It is 1m60 deep. I will tell you more about the sauna technique later.

This sacred place is the spring of the Roman Baths in Bath. You wouldn't believe it when you see this peaceful pictue, but every day 1.170.000 litres of water heated at 46° C rises from this spring. It comes up from some 4 kilometres beneath ground level. You cannot enter the spring area, so I was foreced to take a fisheye picture through a oval peeking hole.

Deze heilige plaats is de bron van de Romeinse baden in Bath. Niet te geloven wanneer je deze kalme foto ziet, maar elke dag borrelen 1.170.000 liter water aan een temperatuur van 46°C hier naar boven. Van 4 kilometer diep. De bron zelf is niet toegankelijk voor het publiek, dus moest ik een fisheye foto maken via deze ovalen opening.

The Great Bath, at the top of the temple, was actually built later than what lies beneath. The spire in the background is that of the Abbey. The water that flows in to this bath from the spring is around body temperature.

Het Grote Bad op de bovenverdieping van de tempel, werd later gebouwd dan wat er onder ligt. De toren in de achtergrond is dat van de abdijkerk. Het water dat van de bron in dit bad vloeit is ongeveer lichaamstemperatuur.

The Roman invasion of Britain dates from in the first century after the birth of Christ, but this couple still seems to be around. They are actors with a great sense of humor. They liven up the place and help tourists out who want something extra on the photo. Construction of the bathing temple started in 50 to 60 AD and continued for 300 years. Today is Saint-Valentine, the day for couples. Happy Valentine!

De Romeinse invastie van Brittannië dateert van de eerste eeuw na Christus, maar dit koppel is precies blijven hangen. Het zijn acteurs met een goed gevoel voor humor. Ze brengen wat leven in de brouwerij en zijn er voor toeristen die niet alleen op de foto willen. De bouw van de badtempel startte in 50 à 60 na Christus. De bouw duurde zo een 300 jaar. Vandaag is het natuurlijk Sint-Valentijn, de dag van de koppeltjes. Happy Valentine!

To visit the remains of the Roman Bathhouse you go in through the Pumphouse. To pass the time waiting in the queue, I tried to get a good shot of the fantastically decorated ceiling. Not easy to get us much of it in as possible. This is just a segment. We went in at 21:00 the evening, it stays open until 22:00. You need about an hour to get a good look at all there is to see. And I can really recommend taking the late tour, because we queued for 15 mins. In the daytime the queue went right round the building on the outside. You can queue for 3 to 4 hours to go in then, which is a dreadful waste of time.

Om de overblijfselen van het Romeinse badhuis te bezoeken ga je het pomphuis binnen. Om de tijd te doden terwijl ik in de wachtrij stond, probeerde ik een goede foto te maken van het prachtig versierde plafond. Niet evident om een zo groot mogelijk segment op de foto te krijgen, dit is maar een deeltje. Wij bezochten het badhuis om 21u 's avonds, het sluit om 22u. En het uur kan je best gebruiken om alles te zien. Ik kan je de late sessie aanbevelen. Wij stonden 15 minuutjes in de rij. Overdag stond de rij tot buiten, gans het gebouw rond. Dan sta je er 3 tot 4u te wachten om binnen te gaan, wat natuurlijk een vreselijke tijdverspilling is.

Do you know what Straford and the City of Bath have in common? Both are situated on the river Avon. But not the same river Avon. There are more than one in England, Scotland and Wales. But then Avon is just the Celtic word for river. Bath has been on my ‘Places to see’-list for years. The photo trip I will take the next week or two starts in the center of Bath. Here we are looking at the front of the Bath Abbey with the Pump House, the entrance to the Roman Baths, on the right. You can start spending quite a few hours here.

Weet je wat Stratford en de stad Bath gemeen hebben? Beiden liggen aan de rivier Avon. Maar niet dezelfde rivier. In Engeland, Schotland en Wales vind je meerdere rivieren die naar de naam ‘Avon’ luisteren. Maar Avon is dan ook het Keltische woord voor ‘rivier’. Bath staat al jaren op mijn lijstje van plaatsen om te bezoeken. De foto trip die wij samen gaan nemen start hier in het hartje van de stad. Recht voor zie je de gevel van de Abdij. Rechts in de foto het pomphuis, tevens de ingang van de Romeinse baden. Op deze plek kan je gerust wat uurtjes slijten.

A sharp contrast with the previous photo, but in some senses a good parallel. Blue, behind glass... This lingerie store showed some good ideas to brighten up a dull evening.

Een scherp contrast met de vorige foto, maar toch enige parallelen. Blauw, achter glas... Deze lingeriewinkel showde enkele goede ideeën om een avond op te vrolijken.

Love the devotion of the Virgin Mary on many houses in the centre of Gent. I never noticed this one before, even though I have passed there many times.

Ik vind de verering van Maria leuk op menige gevel in het centrum van Gent. Deze was mij nog niet opgevallen, niettegenstaande ik er al veel passeerde.

Even in the snow, Don Quichote guards the Spain Square in Brussels.

Zelfs in de sneeuw blijft Don Quichote de wacht houden over het Spanjeplein in Brussel.

The walk to the central station in Brussels last Friday was covered in snow. The streets were just about deserted. Traffic froze.

De wandeling naar het centraal station in Brussel afgelopen vrijdag was er een door de sneeuw. De straten waren verlaten. Het verkeer bevroor tot stilstand.

The last thing I expected to find in Gravesend was an Indian Temple. But then I did start my discovery of Gravesend with an Indian princess. But they have it, a Sikh Gurdwara, meaning the gateway to the Guru. And in the case of Sikhism the Guru is Nanak. You'll find temples all over the UK, but not all of them are as authentic looking as this one.

Het laaste wat ik in Gravesend verwachtte te vinden was een Indische Tempel. Maar goed, ik startte mijn ontdekking met een Indiaanse prinses. Maar ze hebben er een Sikh Gurdwara, een toegangspoort tot de goeroe. En in het geval van het Sikh geloof is de goeroe Nanak. Another architectural element you'll typically find in England's grander cities is the cresent. Berkley Cresent does not have the grandour of what I saw in Bath, but maybe it is not a bad thing that I publish photos of this one first. I still have to work on the photos that I took in Bath last summer.

Nog een architecturaal hoogstandje dat je in de betere steden in de UK terugvindt is de boog-architectuur. Constructies, huizenrijen, gebouwen in boogvorm. Meestal wel doorkruist door straten, maar ze vormen een boog of ovaal. Berkley Cresent heeft niet de grootsheid van de Royal Crescent in Bath die ik afgelopen zomer bezocht. Die foto's moet ik nog afwerken.

Stolling back to my car along a canal, I discovered another great installation, somewhat smaller in size.

Op de weg terug naar mijn auto, langs een kanaal, ontdekte ik nog een mooie installatie, een beetje kleiner toch.

I couldn't make time to visit Gent while the light festival was actually on. Tom asked me to drop him off last Sunday after lunchtime, so I went for a walk in the centre then. This guy, part of the permanent architectural beauty of Gent, wat trying to stare through just about the most impressive installation of the festival.

Ik slaagde er niet in in Gent te geraken terwijl het licht festival actie was. Tom vroeg mij om hem afgelopen zondag na de lunch in Gent af te zetten. Ik maakte daarna een wandeling in het centrum. Deze man, een deel van de permanente archtecturale schoonheid van de stad, probeerde ook nog wat aandacht te krijgen doorheen de meest indrukwekkende installatie van het festival.
