This is the way in to the Sandworm, the head. This was my first Beaufort04 exhibit and on target as far as I'm concerned. I'll try to provide you with a look at all the works of art the weeks, months to come. I'm sure that the Sandworm is one of the more spectacular works. I'll try to make photo's of the less spectacular stuff as well.

Dit is dan de ingang van de Zandworm, de kop. Dit was dus mijn eerste kunstwerk van Beaufort04 en een schot in de roos wat mij betreft. De komende weken/maanden probeer ik jullie een overzicht te geven van alle kunstwerken. Deze zandworm is zeker een van de meer spectaculaire werken. Ik probeer ook mooie foto's te maken van de minder spectaculaire werken.

This is looking out from the inside through the opening of the head of the Sandworm. What you could likely not really see in the previous photo is that the centre of the body is dug out really deep. This gives the light falling in an extra something, it is like you are looking down in the belly of the worm. The artist Marco Casagrande's work balances on the border between architecture and visual art. His work pays witness to a continuing interaction between work and environment. There is not a single building of his that is not seaching for the questions thrown up by the immediate surroundings.

En hier kijk ik van de binnenkant van de worm door de opening in de kop. Wat je in de vorige foto wellicht moeilijk kon zien is dat de binnenkant van het centrale gedeelte diep uitgegraven is. Dit geeft het invallende licht iets extra's. Het is alsof je naar beneden in de buik van de worm kijkt. Het werk van de kunstenaar Marco Cassagrande bevindt zich op het snijvlak tussen architectuur en beeldende kunst. Zij werk getuigt van een voortdurende interactie tussen werk en omgeving. Er is geen enkel bouwwerk van zijn hand dat niet op zoek gaan naar de vragen die de directe omgeving opwerpt.

Inside the sandworm you are greeted by a natural spectacle of light and shadow. I was amazed. How you can create such beauty with such simple natural materials. Of course, it does help to choose a sunny day. Ample sun gives you so much more to play with as amateur photographer. To continue on the subject of living creatures, where I broke off yesterday, the artist believes that architectural control goes against nature and thus also agains architecture. The built human environment is a mediator between human nature and nature itself. To be part of this, man must be weak.

Binnenin de zandworm wordt je begroet door een natuurlijk spectakel van licht en schaduw. Ik stond versteld. Hoe je zo'n schoonheid kan creëren met simpele natuurlijke materialen. Natuurlijk helpt het om de zandworm te bezoeken op een zonnige dag. Hier geeft overvloedige zon je lekker veel om mee te spelen. Om verder te doen met het onderwerp van levende wezens, waar ik gisteren afbrak, de artiest gelooft dat architecturale controle tegen de natuur in gaat en dus ook tegen de architectuur. De gebouwde menselijke omgeving is een bemiddelaar tussen de menselijke natuur en de natuur zelf. Om hier deel van uit te maken, moet de mens zwak zijn.

I think this is the rear way in to the Sandworm, but the light was shining from behind the thing, so I gathered this was the best way in to the construction. To the Finnish artist Marco Casagrande designing is not sufficient. Design should not replace reality. The building must grow out of the location, it must react to its environment, it must be a reflection of life and also be itself, as every other living being.

Ik denk dat dit de achterzijde van de zandworm is. Het licht bescheen de worm van langs achteren, dus Ik dacht dat dit de beste weg naar binnen was. Voor de Finse kunstenaar Marco Casagrande is ontwerpen niet voldoende. Design hoort de werkelijkheid niet te vervangen. Het gebouw moet uit de locatie groeien, het moet reageren op zijn omgeving, het moet een weerspiegeling van het leven zijn en vooral ook zichzelf zijn, zoals elk ander levend wezen.

Have you heard of the sandworm? A work of art made from interwoven willow branches. You'll find the sandworm on the top of a sanddune.

Kennen jullie de zandworm? Een kunstwerk van 50 meter lang gemaakt uit gevlochten wilgentakken. Ze ligt boven op een duinengordel.

Played a recreational badminton tournament yesterday in Brugge. I coupled our star player Fons to Daphne, they share the same surname. They played very well. And found time to pose for the photo.

Ik speelde vandaag een recreantenontmoeting in Brugge. Ik koppelde onze sterspeler Alfons aan Daphne, ze delen dezelfde achternaam. Ze speelden heel goed en vonden zelfs tijd om voor de foto te poseren.

Queen Square is just about central for all things to see in Bath. Our hotel was to one of the four sides of the square. I didn't find the building that interesting, it was one of the more recent ones. But these, around the same square, I did find interesting.

Queen Square is ongeveer in het centrum van alles wat bezienswaardig is in Bath. Ons hotel bevond zich aan een van de vier kanten van de square. Het gebouw op zich vond ik niet zo interessant, een van de recentere. Maar deze aan dezelfde square, vond ik wel interesssant.

10 dagen geleden postte ik een foto van Pulteney Bridge in Bath. Maar ik vergat die post op te volgen met eentje van wat je op de brug kan vinden. Niet alleen een paar unieke winkels, maar ook kleurrijke figuren.

Having started with Beaufort in the beginning of this week, I have a good excuse to get back to my last pictures of Bath and have a look at the decorative art side of the city. How do you prefer the statue in this post, in the first or the second take?

De week beginnen met Beaufort, geeft mij een goed uitvlucht om terug naar Bath te keren voor de laatste foto's van mijn trip. En dat over de decoratieve kunst in die stad. Hoe verkiezen jullie het beeld in deze post, in de eerste of de tweede foto?

The first day of spring. I'm not much of a flower poster, but I like this shot that I took in a park in Bath last summer.

De eerste dag van de lente. Ik post hier niet veel bloemen, maar vind dit shot wel iets, ik nam het in een park in Bath vorige zomer.

The reason why I am so enthousiastic to start early with my Beaufort photography is because the works of art are placed where tourists like to come. So in the summer season it is not easy to get close to the works by car. On the way back from my failed discovery tour I decided to try my hand at creating some street art.

De reden waarom ik zo enthousiast ben om vroeg te starten met mijn Beaufort fotografie is omdat de werken toeristische trekpleisters zijn. Dus in het zomerseizoen is het helemaal niet evident om te per wagen te ontdekken. Op de terugweg van mijn gefaalde ontdekkingstocht probeerde ik wat straat kunst te maken.

Remember Beaufort? The open air art exhibition along the Belgian coast? My long term visitors will, I've posted photos of the previous 3 editions. And now edition 4 is about to start. I went on a pre discovery today, but a bit too early, I'm afraid. I mistook the beach art in the photo below as an Beaufort exhibit, but it is not. Beaufort 04 from the end of March up until the end of September well worth visiting.

Herinner je je Beaufort? De open lucht kunst tentoonstelling langsheel de Belgische kust? Mijn lange termijn bezoekers zullen zich dat zeker herinneren, ik postte foto's van de vorige 3 edities. En nu start de vierde. Ik trok op verkenning vandaag, maar ik vrees dat ik wat te vroeg ben. Ik dacht dat de foto in deze post bij Beaufort hoorde, maar dat is niet het geval. Beaufort 04 loopt van het einde van maart tot en met einde september. Loont de moeite.

I am a very proud president of a badminton club, because I have a Belgian Champion. Ann De Raeymaecker, our wheelchair player, won the women's singles. The maximum numer of points against was 9. Great show, Ann!

Ik ben een trotse voorzitter van een badmintn club, want mijn club telt een Belgisch Kampioene. Ann De Raeymaecker, onze rolstoel atlete, won de dames enkel. Het hoogst aantal punten dat ze tegen kreeg in een game was 9. Proficiat Ann!

I've posted a picture of this work of art on the front of the Ustinov Studio before here on my blog. But I find this version better. The shadow helps the picture.

Ik heb eerder een foto gepost van dit kunstwerk op de gevel van de Ustinov Studio oin Bath. Maar deze versie vind ik beter. De schaduw accentueert het werk.

Rather exceptional to find such a marvelous tree in the centre of town. You can see the abbey in the background.

Eerder uitzonderlijk om zo'n mooie boom in het centrum van het stad aan te trekken. Je ziet de abdijkerk in de achtergrond.

Architecture lovers will love Bath. Here, under the arch, the Abbey, to the left the wall of the Roman Baths, and the arch you'll find over the road running along the side wall of the Roman Baths.

Liefhebbers van architectuur zijn gek op Bath. Door de boog heen zie je de abdijkerk. Links de zijmuur van de Romeinse baden. De boog zelf overkoepelt de straat die langsheen de zijmuur van de Romense baden loopt.

The most famous bridge topped with shops crossing a river must obiously be the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) in Florence, Italy. But the Pulteney Bridge in Bath is pretty special as well. Much younger than it's Italian predecessor, but never the less beautiful.

De meest bekende brug over een rivier met winkels er op moet ongetwijfeld de Ponte Vecchio (Oude Brug) zijn in Firenze, Italië. Maar de Pulteney Brug in Bath is ook wel speciaal. Veel jonger dan de Italiaanse voorganger, maar daarom niet minder mooi.

The park along the Avon near Pulteney Bridge boast a tree for the future. A multinational initiative reminding us that trees are important to our survival.

In het park langsheen de rivier Avon dicht bij de Pulteney brug vind je de boom voor de toekomst. Een multinationaal initiatief dat hier een heel mooie invulling krijgt. Bomen zijn belangrijk voor onze overleving.

What I particulary enjoyed about Bath is that it is one of those towns with a lot of green, with a lot of nice parks. Must be great to witness a band or choir performing here.

Wat ik in het bijzonder kon waarderen aan Bath is dat het een van die steden is met veel groen, met mooie parken. Moet bijzonder zijn om hier getuige te zijn van een groepje of een koor.

I'm up early this Sunday morning. Playing a recreative badminton match against Oostkamp, a town some 30 to 40 Ks from where I live. A club I have a lot of affection for, my son played for them 3 seasons, I captained a team one season. The photo is one of Rani, not during a recreative event, but playing a junior tournament. Where she won. Doing well, Rani! The trainer in the background, with the white bag filled with sandwiches, is my eldest son Tom, Rani's trainer. He is doing very well with his young trainees.

Ik ben vroeg op deze zondag morgen. Strak speel ik een recreanten challenge badminton tegen de club van Oostkamp, een gemeente op 30 tot 40 kilometers van waar ik woon. Een club waar ik van houd, mijn zoon speelde er gedurende 3 seizoenen competitie. I was er gedurende 1 seizoen ploegkapitein. De foto is er eentje van Rani, niet tijdens een recreatief evenement, wel op een jeugdtoernooi. Ze won. Goed bezig, Rani! De jonge man in de achtergrond met de witte platic zak gevuld met sandwichen, is mijn oudste zoon Tom, Rani's trainer. Hij is goed bezig met zijn jonge trainees.

No other building has been the source for so much controversy in Bath as has the Empire Hotel. Finished in 1901, the rooftop of the hotel clearly shows 3 different styles. The right corner of the hotel is castle-style, reserved for the upper class guests. The middle part represents a house and is destined for the middle class. And the lower class should sleep under the cottage style roof on the left side of the building. Many inhabitants of this tourist attraction city called for this building to be torn down. Today it houses a well known restaurant, still serves partly as a hotel, and also provides rooms to well off elderly people.

Geen ander gebouw in Bath was de bron voor zo veel controverse als de Empire hotel. Afgewerkt in 1901, vertoont het dak duidelijk 3 verschillende stijlen. Rechts op de hoek van het gebouw zie je de kasteel-stijl, voorbehouden aan gasten van de hogere klasse. Het middelste gedeelte vertegenwoordigt een 'huis' en is bedoeld voor de middenklasse. Het linkse gedeelte, tot slot, met het cottage-dak is bedoeld om de lagere klasse te huisvesten. Veel inwoners van deze toeristenstad vroegen om dit gebouw gesloopt te zien. Vandaag huisvest het een bekend restaurant, doet deels nog dienst als hotel en voorziet in woningen voor welgestelde ouderen.

A couple of buskers in Bath, the Abbey in the background. The guy's hat makes me smile. It was a warm day, we were wearing T-shirts, lot of girls in short skirts or shorts. He kind of reminds me of one of the singers of the Mamas & Papas.

Straatartiesten in Bath, met de abdijkerk in de achtergrond. Moet lachen met die gast zijn muts. Het was een warme dag, wij droegen T-shirts, veel meisjes droegen korte rokjes of broekjes. Die man doet mij denken aan één van de zangers van de Mamas & Papas.

When we arrived near Brecon in South-Wales to take the steam train up the mountains in the Brecon National Park, we were greeted by the sight of this elegant animal at the top of a hill. A great start to the day.

Toen wij de stoomtrein wilden nemen dicht bij Brecon in Zuid-Wales, werden bij begroet door het schitterende zicht van dit elegante paard bovenop een heuvel. Een mooie manier om de dag in het Nationale Park te starten.

Riding an open top bus gives you a different view of the city. You get to spy on people as well. Hope these two don't mind. Couldn't ask them, of course, as the bus was riding along.

Een rit in een dakloze bus biedt je een andere kijk op de stad. Je kan mensen dan ook lekker bespeieden. Ik hoop dat dit koppel het niet erg vindt dat ik ze publiceer. Ik kon het ze niet vragen, de bus wou niet stoppen.

1767-1774 John Woods jr supervised the construction of the Royal Crescent in Bath. It became known as the Royal Creschent some time later, after Prince Frederick, the duke of York, resided there for a while. Again, there is no denying the link John Woods and his father had to the Masonic lodge, John jr was even interested in the occult, it seemed. When you look at the map again the Circle and the Crescent form the masonic symbol of the sun and the moon.

1767-1774 John Woods jr was de architect die toezicht hield over de bouw van de Royal Crescent in Bath. De stempel "Royal" kwam eigenlijk pas later nadat prins Frederick, de graaf van York er een tijdje woonde. Opnieuw duidelijk een verwijzing naar de vrijmetselarij, John Woods jr zou ook in het occulte geïnteressereerd geweest zijn. Wanneer je naar de kaart van Bath kijkt, wordt het duidelijk dat de nabijgelegen Cirkel en deze boog verwijzen naar de zon en de maan, een symbool van de vrijmetselarij.

I'm sure you did not notice in yesterday's post, but the houses forming the Circus are actually layered in 3 different classical orders, from bottom to top: Doric - Roman/Composite - Corinthian. The pillars give it away.
Another particularity is that seen from the sky, the Circus, Gay Street and Queen Square form the symbol of a key, which is a masonic symbol. Not the only one in John Wood's architectures.
Our hotel was on Queen Square, wich is nice, it is just about the centre of Bath.

Ongetwijfeld kon je dat gisteren niet opmerken in de foto's, maar de huizen die het circus vormen tonen 3 verschillende architectuurlagen, van onder naar boven: Dorische Orde - Composiete Orde - Korinthise Orde. De zuilen tonen dit duidelijk.
Nog een bijzonderheid is dat van uit de lucht gezien, het Circus, Gay Street en Queen Square een sleutel vormen, wat een symbool van de vrijmetselarij is. Dergelijke symbolen vind je vaak terug in de architecture van John Wood.
Ons hotel bevond zich op Queen Square, wat leuk was, het is ongeveer het centrum van Bath.

The Circus in Bath is cresent-alike Georgian architecture designed by architect John Wood sr in 1754. He died before the first stone was laid, so his son John Wood jr supervised the construction. The Circus is a perfect circle formed by 3 circular rows of houses, separated from each other by 3 roads giving entry to the circle. Each road entering the circle looks on to one of the rows of houses. Splendid design!

Het Circus in Bath is een stuk fijne Georgische architectuur ontworpen door architect John Wood sr in 1754. Hij stierf vooraleer de eerste steen gelegd werd, dus zijn zoon John Wood jr zag het ontwerp van zijn vader gerealiseerd. Het Circus is een perfecte cirkel gevormd door 3 huizenrijen onderbroken door 3 straten die toegang tot de cirkel geven. Elke straat komt de cirkel binnen loodrecht op een tegenoverliggende huizenrij. Prachtig ontwerp, dus.

I see that my doubles partner commented on yesterday's post that I hit her with my racket last week. That is indeed so, but what she fails to add is that she was at the net while I was at the back of the court and she receded to take a return that went high to the back of the court. Which was obviously mine to smash. We did win the point.

Ik zie dat mijn dubbelpartner op de post van gisteren commentarieerde dat ik haar raakte met mijn racket tijdens een match. Dat is zo, maar wat ze er niet bij zegt is dat zij aan het net stond en ik achteraan. Zij trok zich terug naar achteren op een return die hoog en ver naar de achterkant van de baan ging. Het was dus duidelijk aan mij om die pluim te smashen. Wij wonnen wel het punt, ik raakte haar in de uitzwaai.

What should you be focussing on when your partner is playing a shot?
You should have confidence in your partner that he or she will play the shot well and you should be ready to react to the return if needed.
In all fairness: the guys are B-players in a junior tournament. The girls are top players.
Also notice that both girl's feet are off the ground, this is how reactive they are.

Waar moet je concentratie liggen wanneer je partner een shot speelt?
Je moet vertrouwen hebben in je partner dat hij/zij het shot goed zal spelen en je moet klaar staan om te reageren op de return indien nodig.
In alle eerlijkheid: de mannen zijn B-spelers op een KW-cup, de meisjes zijn A-speelsters op het hoogste niveau.
Let ook op dat geen van de meisjes de voeten op de grond heeft, zo reactief zijn ze.
Maar dit zijn dan ook Jelske Snoeck en Janne Elst, Belgische kampioenes dames dubbel.
