Not just boats to brighten up the atmosphere in our town during the past extemely sunny weekend, but also some British Steam Machines. Great crew, fun guys.

Niet enkel boten om de sfeer er in te brengen in het zonovergoten Oostende het afgelopen weekeinde, maar ook enkele Britse stoommachines. Fantatische benamming, leuke kerels.

Not just the old vessels attracted my attention, this Buzzi 42 Rib got caught on my lens as well. I'm not too pleased with the composition, but I caught the vessel as it was turning in to port. Beneath the vessel is the messy end of the quay, so I left that out of the composition. This craft is capable of doing 70 knots that is about the landspeed equivalent of 120 km/hour. This type of vessel is often used by armed forces.

Niet enkel de oude vaartuigen trokken mij aandacht, deze Buzzi 42 Rib moest ik toch ook vastleggen. Ik ben niet zo blij met de compositie van deze foto, maar ik zag het vaartuig te laat en moest de foto maken terwijl ze de haven binnendraaide. Aan de onderkant van de boot had ik de rommelige havenmuur mee in de compositie, heb dat er afgeknipt. Dit vaartuig kan tot 70 knopen halen, wat overeenstemt met zo'n 120 km/u landsnelheid. Dit type boot wordt vaak voor militaire doeleinde gebruikt.

I've just finished reading 'Burnt Shadows' by Indian author Kamila Shamsie. An interesting family history spanning from the end of WWII to Afghanistan in 2001. It ends in the USA market by 9/11.

Wij zeilden vorig jaar uit met dit vaartuig: de Morgenster. Gezien ik dit naar niet met haar in zee trok, kon ik deze foto van haar maken terwijl ze de haven binnen voer.
Ik heb net 'Burnt Shadows' van de Indiase schrijfster Kamila Shamsie uitgelezen. Een interessante familiegeschiedenis die start op het einde van WOII en eindigt in Afghanistan in 2001. En in een USA getekend door de naweeën van 9/11.

I was just about to have my weekly 121 with my boss when the fire drill was called through the speakers. As the Place de la Monnaie is still undergoing its transformation, we had to evacuate the the Martyr Square a bit further down. Terrible photos using my iPad, but I found it funny that the crowd that filled the square actually hindered our core business, as you can see in the second photo.

Ik ging net mij wekelijkse 121 met mijn overste aanvangen toen de brandoefening aangekondigd werd door de luidsprekers. Gezien het Muntplein nog in volle transformatie is, moesten wij naar het Martelarenplein evacueren, enkele stappen verder. Vreselijk slechte foto's maakt die iPad, maar ik vond het grappig dat het talrijk aanwezige publiek het plein vulde en zo onze core business hinderde. Zoals je in de tweede foto kunt zien.

This weekend Oostende welcomes "Oostende at Anker", the authentic ships happening. Steam is this year's theme. And this little tug made a lot of that and a lot of noise entering the port last Thursday.

Dit weekeinde is er terug "Oostende voor Anker", het authentieke schip gebeuren. Stoom is dit jaar het thema. En deze kleine schuit produceerde er veel ook veel lawaai wanneer het de haven binnen voer afgelopen donderdag.

If it can earn you an honest euro, why not?

The building on the left side of the street in yesterday's photo is the Grand Synagogue in Brussels. I tried to get in completely in the picture here, but is wasn't easy. I've been taking photo's with my BlackBerry again.

Het gebouw aan de linkerzijde in de foto van gisteren is de Grote Synagoge in Brussel. Ik moest een inspanning doen om het hier volledig op de foto te krijgen, niet gemakkelijk. Ik ben weer foto's met mijn BlackBerry aan het maken.

A street view here when I was walking along Regent's street in Brussels towards the Courts of Justice in the distance. Shortly after 8 in the morning.

Een straatzicht hier terwijl ik langs de Regenschapsstraat wandelde in Brussel in de richting van het Justitiepaleis. Kort na 8u 's morgens.

In the evening, after my training, sun and rain together, causing this beautifully blinding spray on the motorway.

's Avonds, op de terugweg na mijn opleiding, zon en regen tegelijk, dus een lekkere verblindend watergordijn op de snelweg.

As you can see by this photo taken from the top of the 'Arts Hill' in Brussels, the day started nice and sunny when I headed for my training.

Zoals je kan zien in deze foto, genomen van boven op de Kusntberg, startte de dag mooi en zonnig toen ik naar mijn opleiding ging.

Two days of training near the Poelaert Square in Brussels last week, very close to the courts of justice. It is an elevated part of Brussels, this artwork of a hot air balloon is near the balcony of the square, you can just see the basilica in the background.

Twee dagen in opleiding nabij het Poelaert Plein in Brussel de afgelopen week. Zeer dicht bij het gerechtshof. Dat is natuurlijk het hoge gedeelte van Brussel aan de rand van de Marollen. Leuk kunstwerkje van een luchtballon nabij het balkon. In de achtergrond zie je de Basiliek van Koekelberg.

Last weekend saw yet another edition of the kite festival in Oostende. I got there at 16:00 on the Sunday afternoon, which is not a good idea because it is just about finished then. But I still managed to enjoy the good weather and get a few shots. 

Vorig weekeinde zag nog maar eens een editie van het vliegerfestival in Ootende. Ik geraakte er om 16u de zondag namiddag, wat geen goed idee is, dan is het zo ongeveer afgelopen. Maar ik slaagde er toch in van het goede weer te genieten en een paar foto's te maken. Langsheen onze kust kan je geen foto's nemen zonder er de onvermijdelijke bouwkranen op te vereeuwigen. Maar dat eeuwige lijkt precies een realiteit te zijn.

So as you may have guessed, I'm really into Isaac Cordal's work. I'll finish this photo series of De Panne with the business man an the Yoga Policeman. Yoga is the combatter's way of relaxing. I will go back to De Panne to take some more photos.

Jullie konden het wellicht al raden, maar ik ben weg van Isaac Cordal's werk. Ik beëindig deze lange serie van zijn expo in De Panne met de zakenman en de yoga politie-agent. Yoga is de vechter's manier van ontspannen. Ik ga zeker terug naar De Panne om nog wat foto's te maken.

Often where demonstrations are held, demonstrations for a better environment, riot police are present. And so Isaac has modelled riot police persons in his collection of miniatures. In the villa in De Panne he leaves no corner unturned. Here his riot police guard a cupboard.

Dikwijls waar demonstraties doorgaan voor een betere zorg voor het milieu, vind je oproerpolitie. Zij konden niet ontbreken in Isaac's verzameling miniaturen. In de villa in De Panne installeert hij zijn kunst van muur tot muur. De oproerpolitie vind je in een inbouwkast.

Thanks to Isaac's flickr I know what this is all about: 'Waiting for a Climate Change'. Yesterday's work is part of the same theme. Love it!

Dankzij Isaac's flickr weet ik wat het thema hier is, tevens dat van de foto die ik hier gisteren postte: 'Wachten op een klimaatsverandering'. Serieus onderwerp, maar ik hou er van.

Continuing yesterday's theme, maybe not everyone will have a boat and some of us will have to face the dirty water like this. Not a desirable prospect, I admit. Anyone remember the film 'Waterworld' with Kevin Costner? 1995 is the year of the film, no more polar caps, they have melted.

Verder boerend op het thema van gisteren, misschien zal niet iedereen een bootje hebben en zullen ze het vuile water zo moeten trotseren. Geen hoopgevend vooruitzicht. Herinnert zich iemand de fim 'Waterworld' van 1995 met Kevin Costner? Gesmolten polen...

I've been looking on Isaac Cordal's Flickr for some meaning behind this work, but I have failed to find it. Maybe again it has something to do with the environment, rising water? We will turn into boad people? A sharp reminder wat the film 2012 they showed last Saturday. Not the best film I have ever seen, but I guess it does carry a message. Ik ben op zoek geweest op Isaac Cordal's flickr naar de betekening van dit werk, maar ik vond er niets over terug. Misschien heeft het iets te doen met het milieu, stijgend waterniveau? Is dat onze toekomst: boot bewoners? Daar werden wij afgelopen weekeinde aan herinnerd door de fim 2012. Niet de beste rampenfilm die ik ooit zag, maar het brengt wel een boodschap. This photo of more leaders seems to be suffering from the bald man effect. I should really go back to try and take some more picture of this sandy installation. There were quite a few people circling the installation when I got there, so it was hard to get an overview without getting other people in. I will go back.

Deze foto van nog wat leaders lijdt precies aan het kalende mannen effect. Ik moet terug gaan en proberen van nog wat foto's van dit mooie werk te maken, onder andere een overzicht. Er was nog wat volk in de kamer aanwezig, dus kon ik moeilijk een overzichtsfoto maken zonder andere mensen in de compositie te integreren. Ik ga zeker terug.

This is a small part of the work for which I actually went to De Panne: "Follow the Leaders" by Isaac Cordal (SP).
Isaac is a street artist. His cement sculptures are no bigger than 25 cm. He often takes to the streets of Brussels, some 20 sculptures in his backpack, to place them in the cityscape and take pictures.

Dit is een klein stukje van het werk waarvoor ik speciaal naar De Panne ging: "Follow the Leaders" door Isaac Cordal (SP). Isaac is een straatarties. Zijn cementen figuren zijn niet groter dan 25 cm. Vaak trekt hij door de straten van Brussel met een 20 tal beeldjes in zijn rugzak. Hij plaatst ze dan in het straatbeeld om er foto's van te maken.

A true nightmare: our environment has become so soiled that we have to marry wearing gas masks. Isaac Cordal's works are on show all summer in a villa in De Panne, our coastal town closest to the French border. I deliberately played with the light falling in through the windows here to try and create an extra dimension of depth in the photo where the two cement figures are placed under a glass bell.

Een nachtmerrie: ons milieu is zo vervuild geworden dat trouwers gasmaskers moeten dragen. Isaac Cordal's werken kan je gans de lente en zomer bezoeken in een villa in De Panne. Ik speelde in deze foto's opzettelijk met het door de ramen invallende licht en probeerde zo in de foto waarin de figuurtjes onder een stolp staan, een extra diepte-effect na te streven.

I like art with a message. The horrifying BP incident a while ago inspired Spanish artist Isaac Cordal to devote some works to the damage that was done to our environment.

Ik houd van kunst met een boodschap. Het verschikkelijke BP incident een tijdje terug inspireerde Spaanse artiest Isaac Cordal om enkele werken toe te wijden aan de schade die door dit incident aan onze omgeving toegebracht werd.

When I saw this tiny work of art by Spanish artist Isaac Cordal, my thought was 'Life is Expensive'. It looked like the man in the picture was holding one of my long grocery bills. But it seems to be something else.

Waneer ik dit kleine kunstwerkje door Spaanse artiest Isaac Cordal zag, was mijn eerste gedachte "Het leven is duur". Het zag er naar uit dat de man in het kadertje een van mijn ellenlange kassastrookjes van de supermarkt aan het bestuderen was. Toek ik de foto bewerkte zag ik dat het iets anders is.

After photographing the benches in De Haan, I came across this young lady enjoying the evening sun.

Nadat ik in De Haan de banken gefotografeerd had, ontmoette ik deze jonge dame die genoot van de avondzon.

Maybe not comfortable to sit on, but nice and teasing to the eye.

Misschien geen al te gemakkelijk zitcomfort, maar wel een knipoog en aantrekkelijk.

It has been about a year since I have published a photo of people phoning or using their phones in a particuliar way. I stumbled across this photo by accident, took it a couple of years ago.

Het is ongeveer een jaar geleden sinds ik nog een foto publiceerde van mensen die publiekelijk telefoneren of hun telefoon op een eigenaardige manier gebruiken. Op zoek naar een andere foto vond ik deze in mijn archief. Al een aantal jaren oud.

I came home to Fridays ago to find this sympathetic vehicle parked on the other side of the road in my steet. No idea who it belongs to, but I really like it. All photos since Tuesday were made with my BlackBerry.

Ik kwam twee vrijdagen geleden thuis en vond dit voertuig in mijn straat geparkeerd. Geen idee wie de eigenaar is, maar ik vind het heel tof. Alle foto's sinds vorige dinsdag heb ik met mijn BlackBerry gemaakt.

I've categorized this post under 'street', the issue being that the street is absent. This is outside where my eldest son's girlfriend lives, you can see my car in parked to where the street still reaches. A beautiful Sunday morning this was, two Sundays ago.

Ik heb deze post onder 'street' gecategoriseerd, het probleem zijnde dat de 'straat' er niet echt meer is. Dit is aan de voorzijde van waar mijn oudste zoon's vriendin woont, in de verte zie je mijn wagen staan, daar houdt de straat dus op. Twee zondagen geleden: een mooie zondagmorgen.

I seem to have something with screens, don't I? Since we have moved to a landscape priciple with the whole company in our central facilities and nobody has his own desk anymore I'm doing an effort to work paperless. My own device iPad helps with that, but I've also discovered the concept of working in extended screen moded with my notebook PC. Where I used to print stuff, I now park it on my external screen and visualise it there while I continue working on the screen of my notebook PC. Handy when you are working on big spreadsheets.

Het ziet er naar uit alsof ik iets met schermen heb, niet? Sinds wij met gans het hoofdkwartier naar een landscape zonder eigen bureaus gemigreerd zijn, en weinig opslagruimte, doe ik een inspanning om papierloos te werken. Mijn persoonlijke iPad helpt daarbij, maar ik ontdekte ook het concept van in 'extended screen' modus te werken met mijn notebook PC. Waar ik vroeger zaken geprint zou hebben, parkeer ik ze nu op mijn extern scherm om het document daar te visualiseren, terwijl ik verder werk op het scherm van mijn notebook. Handig wanneer je op grote werkbladen of schema's werkt.

Something that has been keeping my thoughts busy for a while now: time and trains. Obviously because they don't seem to run on time very often. Offboarding at Brussels North station last week I managed to get a shot combining both. My train was nearly on time.

Iets dat mij al een tijdje bezigh houdt: tijd en treinen. Die rijden dikwijls niet volgens schema. Toen ik vorig week afstapte in Brussel Noord maakte ik een foto die beide elementen combineert. Mijn trein was dan bijna op tijd.
