About a month ago I posted about the heart of Antwerp. This is in the museum of fine arts in Dijon, where a Burgundy woman rather literaly offers her heart.

Ongeveer een maand geleden postte ik over het hart van Antwerpen. Dit is in het museum voor schone kunsten in Dijon, waar een Bourgondische vrouw letterlijk haar hart aanbiedt.

As there are that many mustard shops in Dijon, they all have to do their best to attract the customer and get him to buy the product at their place. This business is right in the centre of the city and this old timer does draw some attention.

 Gezien er veel mosterd winkels in Dijon zijn, moeten ze allemaal hun best doe nom de klant aan te trekken en hem bij hen te doen kopen. Deze zaak is in het centrum van de stad en deze old timer trekt wel wat aandacht.

When you visit the mustard shops in Dijon, they really present their product as if it is something precious. Attractive to the amateur photographer as well.

Wanneer je de mosterd winkels in Dijon bezoekt, ontdek je dat ze hun product als iets waardevols presenteren. Ook aantrekkelijk voor de amateur fotograaf.

The French city of Dijon is of course well known for its mustard. And they exploit this. They uplift mustard to a trendy fashionable product.

De Franse stad Dijon is wel bekend voor de mosterd. En dat exploiteren ze goed. Ze verheffen mosterd tot een trendy product.

In Vallandry, high in the French Alps, downhill mountain biking is very popular. A British family staying in an apartment near to ours, came down the mountain daily at high velocity. A sport not without danger. I noticed that one young woman had a very large hematoma on her thigh.

In Vallandry, hoog in de Franse Alpen, is downhill mountain biking heel populair. Een Britse familie die in een appartement dicht bij het onze logeerde, scheerde dagelijks de bergflank af. Geen ongevaarlijke sport. Ik merkte op dat een jonge vrouw een heel grote hematoom op haar dij had.

This cat was enjoying a good sleep in the afternoon sun. She opened her eyes when I showed interest, but she must have thought: you can't reach me behind these bars.

Deze kat genoot van een siësta in de namiddagzon. Ze opende haar ogen wanneer ik mijn interesse liet blijken, maar ze dacht wellicht: je kan mij toch niet raken, ik zit lekker achter tralies.

Continuing on yesterday's theme, the City of Rotterdam in The Netherlands has done a lot of effort as well to make shopping as attractive as possible. This shopping street descends below street level and passes under the busy streets above. The building on the left is the World Trade Center.

Aansluitend op het thema van gisteren kon ik zien dat de Stad Rotterdam in Nederland ook een serieuze inspanning geleverd heeft om het winkelen aangenaam te maken. Deze winkelstraat zakt onder het straatniveau zodat het onder de drukke verkeersaders passeert. Het gebouw links in de foto is het World Trade Center.

You cannot compare Les Halles in Carpentras to those in Paris. Much smaller and cuter in Carpentras. The pavement in front of the shops is covered, so you can shop or sit and eat dry and protected from the sun. This grocery store charmed me with its authentic character. The fish monger didn’t have much anymore when I visited this one evening, but the little squids drew my attention.

Les Halles in Carpentras kan je niet vergelijken met die in Parijs. In Carpentras zijn ze veel kleiner. Het voetpad langsheen de winkels is overdekt. Je kan er dus zitten om iets te eten of drinken beschermd van regen en zon. Deze kruidenier charmeerde mij door het authentieke karakter. De visboer had niet veel meer over die avond, maar de kleine inktvisjes trokken mijn aandacht.

Carpentras is a small town, but it counts numerous businesses and shops. On the outskirts I discovered some shops offering clothing for women who like to stay well protected from the sun. The center of the town offers the usual modern shops. Pretty cool are the “halls”, but I’ll come back on this later, and the passage in this post was constructed halfway the 19^th century. The covered street connects the potato market with les halles.

Carpentras is een kleine stad, maar je vindt er talrijke winkels en zaken. Aan de rand van de stad ontdekte ik enkele winkels met kledij voor vrouwen die graag goed beschermd blijven van de zon. Het centrum is voorzien van de gewoonlijke moderne winkel. Les halles zijn cool, maar ik kom daar nog op terug. De overdekte passage werd gebouwd halverwege de 19^e eeuw. Het verbindt de aardappelmarkt met les halles.

August 15 is St-Mary day in Belgium. Religion is omnipresent in the streets of cities in France and in Belgium. 15 augustus is Maria dag in België. Religie is alom aanwezig in de straten van steden in Frankrijk en in België. Zoals deze afbeelding van Maria in de hoofdwinkelstraat in Carpentras, een gevel met de typische Franse luikjes, en dit prachtige monument langsheen de Meir in Antwerpen.

Make no mistake, a summercamp badminton is heavy work. The kids get enough time to socialise and relax, but next to that it is badminton, badminton, and more badminton. So on the last but one day, not every kid can manage a heart melting smile.
Reading: I'm halfway Haruki Murakami's 1q84 part 2. I started on Saturday and reached the halfway mark Sunday afternoon. Murakami really builds up the suspense in that book.

Vergis je maar niet, een badminton zomerkamp is hard werk. De kids krijgen voldoende tijd om te relaxen en te socializen, maar het gaat vooral om badminton, badminton en nog badminton. Dus op de voorlaatste dag slaagt niet elke kid er in om een hartverwarmende glimlach te produceren.
Lezen: ik ben halverwege deel 2 van Haruki Murakami's 1q84 deel twee. Ik begon op zaterdag en zat al halverwege zondag namiddag. Murakami slaagt er in om het suspensniveau heel hoog te houden in dat boek.

Last week saw the summercamp organized by the provincial badminton federation. It took place in the seaside town of De Panne, closest to the French border. I drove down last Saturday, which wasn't that easy. The weatherman had announced a superb sunny and warm weekend, so I wasn't the only one on the roads. Far from. But I got there in time for the warming-up. Some players are not aware of the photographer, some are and treat me to their prettiest smile.

Vorige week ging het zomerkamp door georganiseerd door de WVBF, onze provinciale badmintonfederatie. Het ging door in het badstadje De Panne, dicht bij de Franse grens. Ik reed er zaterdagmorgen naar toe, wat niet zo evident was. De weergoden waren de kust gunstig en ik was dus bijlange niet de enige die zich in de wagen verplaatste. Maar ik geraakte er toch op tijd voor de opwarming. Sommige spelers zijn zich niet bewust dat ik fotografeer, andere trakteren mij op hun mooiste glimlach.

In the south of France, you’ll always find a lot of fountains in the towns and villages. The first two pictures show a reconstruction of the Fountain of the Angel, the symbol of Carpentras. This fountain marked the economic center of the town. The original dates from 1730. It was demolished by the town council in 1904 after they decided that fountains represented a waste of precious water. Reconstruction was done in 2004. Fortunately the angel was conserved after the decommissioning.

The second fountain is in the main shopping street, it is a more modern design.

Recently I watched the 2004 French film Innocence. The kind of film that starts with a mystery and ends the same way. The film is a masterpiece but I cannot keep wondering about the deeper meaning of what I have seen. Maybe I should get the book.

In het zuiden van Frankrijk vind je altijd veel fonteinen in de steden en dorpen. De eerste twee foto’s tonen een reconstructie van de Fontein van de Engel, het symbool van Carpentras. Deze fontein markeert het economische centrum van de stad. Het origineel werd er in 1730 gezet. Het werd door het stadsbestuur afgebroken in 1904 nadat ze beslisten dat fonteinen een vorm van verspilling van kostbaar water vertegenwoordigden. Reconstructie werd in 2004 gerealiseerd. Gelukkig was de Engel bewaard gebleven na de buiten gebruikstelling van het origineel.

De tweede fontein vind je in de hoofd winkelstraat, het is van een recent ontwerp.

Onlangs keek in naar de in 2004 gemaakte Franse film Innocence. Het soort film dat mysterieus start en op dezelfde manier eindigt. Het is ongetwijfeld een kunstwerk, maar ik blijf gissen naar de onderliggende diepere betekenis van het verhaal. Misschien moet ik het boek kopen.

Heard the yearly flower carpet was laid out on the central market place in Brussels, so on the way to the office yesterday morning I passed by to take a picture.

Ik hoorde dat het jaarlijkse bloementapijt op de Grote Markt in Brussel lag, dus gisterenmorgen op de weg naar kantoor passeerde ik er om een foto te maken.

What is it that attracts me in the South of France? Why a town like Carpentras in the Provence? Apart from wanting to visit the synagogue, the narrow and colourful streets attract me. I could walk these little streets for hours, taking in all the details.

Wat spreekt mij zo aan in het Zuiden van Frankrijk? Waarom een stadje zoals Carpentras in de Provence? Ik wou nu wel die synagoge bezoeken, maar vooral de smalle, kleurrijke straatjes trekken mij aan. Ik zou uren in deze straatjes kunnen doorbrengen, wandelend en alle details innemend.

Dimitrij Ovtcharov makes it 3 in a row in the 2012 edition of the Ostend Table Tennis Masters.

Dimitrij Ovtcharov wint voor de derde keer op een rij tijdens de 2012-editie van de Ostend Table Tennis Masters.

Dimitrij Ovtcharov was being forced back to the boundaries of his court by his adversary. Jean-Michel Saive decided to help Dimitrij out, perfectly hitting the ball back that would have gone outside the court.
Life can be hard on a sportsman. Jean-Michel had to be in Brussels early the next Sunday morning, August 12, to catch the Eurostar back to London for the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Dimitrij Ovtcharov werd door zijn tegenstander teruggedrongen tot aan het einde van de baan. Jean-Michel Saive besliste een handje toe te steken. Hij sloeg de bal die in zijn baan beland zou zijn perfect terug.
Het leven van een sportman kan hard zijn. Jean-Michel moest vroeg in Brussel zijn de zondagmorgen na de masters, 12 augustus. Hij moest namelijk de Eurostar terug naar Londen nemen voor de slotceremonie van de Olympische Spelen.

New in the reception area of the Table Tennis Masters this year was a great display of historic table tennis pallets. Shame you couldn’t try them out, but some of these models look very old.

Nieuw in de receptie ruimte van de Tafeltennis Masters dit jaar was een leuke tentoonstelling van oude tafeltennis palletjes. Jammer dat je ze niet kon uitproberen, maar sommige modellen zien er toch heel oud uit.

The contest to become Miss Coast 2012 is ongoing. Candidate Julie Blommaert , who is interested in sports, wanted a shot for her portfolio with a match going on in the background. This didn’t really work as Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Tokic Bojan decided to interrupt their match to pose together with this wannabe miss.

De wedstrijd om Miss Coast 2012 te worden loopt. Kandidate Julie Blommaert, die in sport geïnteresseerd is, wou voor haar portfolio een foto met een match in de achtergrond. Dimitrij Ovtcharov en Tokic Bojan werkten eigenlijk niet zo goed mee. Ze beslisten hun match te onderbreken om samen met de kandidate miss te poseren.

Masters Tabletennis in Oostende yesterday. Belgian Olympian Jean-Michels Saive is mimicking Dimitri Ovtcharov here, the winner of the masters. He is imitating Ovtcharov's service in the first photo. In the second Dimitri is copying Saive's way of behaving between games and the way he pulls up his shorts. Great fun!

Ovtcharov's service is het onderwerp van Saive's spot. In de tweede foto kopieert Dimitri Saive's manier van gedragen tussen de rallys, vooral hoe hij zijn broekje optrekt. Vette leute.

The sky can really help you make good photos. Like here on the beach in De Panne that morning. Beautiful clouds providing a great background for this installation. You couldn't make these photos in bright sunshine.

De lucht kan je echt helpen om goede foto's te maken. Zoals hier op het strand in De Panne die morgen. Mooie wolken die voor een super achtergrond zorgen voor deze installatie. Deze foto's kan je niet maken in de felle zon.

Taken like this, the scene looks a little threatning, doesn't it?

Op die manier gefotografeerd ziet deze scene er een beetje bedreigend uit, niet?

A buddy posting some photos of this work a week or two ago, reminded me that I should continue my coverage of the Beaufort04 open air art exposition. This is on the beach in De Panne. The work is titled 'Players' by Chzech artist Michal Gabriel. It is great, you should see it.

Een post van dit werd door een buddie een week of twee terug herinnerde mij er aan dat ik best verder zou doen met mijn posts van Beaufort04, de openlucht kunst tentoonstelling langsheen de Vlaamse Kust. Dit werk heet "Players" door de Tsjechische kunstenaar Michal Gabriel. Het is een fantastische installatie, moet je gezien hebben.

What more can I say about the synagog? These two marble plates carry the ten commandments by Mozes, the laws the Jews still respect. These plates are the only segments in stone, make no mistake, all the rest is wood made to look like stone. The third photo shows a view of one wing of the synagog. The oval shaped windows with the little squares is where the women stood behind. Later the women were allowed on the balconies, now they can share the center area with the men. The men on one side, the women on the other. There is no stopping progress, is there? The chandeliers are gifts from the congregation. The final photo shows the typical Jewish candleholder, don't know what the exact term for this is. My wife was wearing a T-shirt that was slightly showing some natural beauty and was made to cover herself with a shawl she was given when entering the synagog. Funny, in Italy they force you to do that as well in the Roman Catholic churches. Last year we visited the Mosque in Paris and weren't forced to wear anything special. And it was very hot and sunny as well.

Wat kan ik nog zeggen over de synagoge in Carpentras? De twee marmeren tabletten tonen de tien gebonden, de wetten die door de Joden nog gevolgd worden. Enkel deze tabletten zijn van steen gemaakt, al de rest van de versieringen/muren zijn van hout, afgewerkt alsof het steen is. De derde foto toont je een vleugel van de synagoge. De ovalen 'ramen' met het rasterwerk is van waarachter de vrouwen de vieringen konden volgen. Later werden ze toegelaten op de balkons. Nu volgen ze de sabat in het centrale gedeelde samen met de mannen. De mannen aan een zijde, de vrouwen aan de andere. Vooruitgang houd je niet tegen. De lusters zijn geschenken van de gelovigen. De laatste foto toont de typische joodse kandelaar, geen idee hoe je dat precies noemt. Mijn vrouw droeg een T-shirt dat wat natuurlijke schoonheid toonde en werd gedwongen zich met een geleende sjaal te bedekken. In Italië doen ze dat ook wanneer je een R-K kerk bezoekt. Vorig jaar bezochten bij in Parijs de grote moskee en daar maken ze geen probleem van ietwat decolleté of blote benen.

In the oldest synagog in France, in Carpentras, this little chair drew some attention. It is integrated in to the wall, high up. You will not find a depictation of god in a synagog. For members who want to look at something during prayer, there is this chair. As god is everywhere, he is also on this chair. It is very small.

In de oudste synagoge van Frankrijk in Carpentras trok dit stoeltje, hoog in de muur ingebouwd wel de aandacht. In een synagoge vind je geen beeltenis van god. Voor leden die tijdens het gebed toch naar ergens willen kijken is er dit stoeltje. Gezien god overal is, kan hij ook plaatsnemen op dit stoeltje. Het is wel piepklein.

Behind this curtain rest the religious artifacts. Only the rabi is allowed to lift this curtain. A woman claiming to be Jewish insisted to be shown what lies behind. The guide refused. The visiting woman protested: but I am Jewish, I have the right to see what is behind the curtain. The guide: 'If you are truly Jewish, then why don't we see you here for the sabat?'. The visiting woman said she wished she could come for the sabat. Some people...

Achter dit gordijn rusten de religieuze attributen. Alleen de rabijn mag dit gordijn openen. Een vrouw die beweerde Joods te zijn, drong aan om een kijk achter het gordijn te mogen nemen. De gidse weigerde. De vrouw protesteerde: "Maar ik ben Joods, ik heb het recht om te zien wat achter het gordijn schuilt". De gidse: "Als je echt Joodse bent, waarom zien wij je dan hier niet voor de sabat?". De bezoekende vrouw zei dat ze wenste dat ze voor de sabat kon komen. Sommige mensen...

One of the reasons I wanted to visit Carpentras in the Provence in the South of France is that it boasts the oldest synagog in France. Construction started in 1367. Now you may not find this an impressive building, but it was not allowed to be that. You must remember that jews were confined to ghettos in those days and a synagog could never be as impressive as a roman catholic church. Jews houses were not allowed to be any higher than catholic residences as they were not allowed to look down on catholics. This soon became a problem, because being confined to a ghetto, the only way they could expand was in constructing in an upwards direction. The town council solved this by not allowing any windows on the houses side viewing the catholic housing.

Eén van de redenen waarom ik Carpentras in de Provence in Zuid-Frankrijk wou bezoeken is omdat het de oudste synagoge in Frankrijk heeft. Het bouwen startte in 1367. Wellicht ben je zoals ik niet zo onder de indruk van de buitenkant van dit gebouw. Maar het mocht geen uitblinker worden. Je mag niet vergeten dat joden in getto's mosten wonen din die dagen. Een synagoge mocht dus nooit zo mooi zijn als een rooms katholieke kerk. Joden mochten niet hoger bouwen dan woningen van rooms catholieken en dat werd snel een probleem. Gezien hun woongebied tot de getto beperkt moest blijven konden ze maar in één richting uitbreiden: hemelwaarts. Maar het gemeentebestuur van Carpentras vond daar ook een oplossing voor: geen vensters aan de zijde die zicht gaf op de katholieke gemeenschap, zo kon een jood nooit neerkijken op een rooms katholieke.

My wife decided that she was tired of buying bottled herbs and falling without when she needed them, so she started to grow her own. We have a large basin at the bottom of the garden where she carefully cultivates some basic herbs and keeps them free from pests and pesticides. Mijn vrouw besloot dat ze het moe was van kruiden in bokaaltjes te kopen en telkens zonder te vallen wanneer ze ze nodig had, dus nu onderhoudt ze wat kruiden in onze tuin. In een zonnige hoek op het einde van de tuin staat een grote zinken kuip waar ze nauwlettend enkele basiskruiden cultiveert zonder pesticiden en ongedierte. Ik vond de dille mooi genoeg om er invulling van mijn andere hobby mee te geven. Mijn primaire hobby zijde van goed eten genieten J

Carpentras is well known for its market. It covers just about the whole town. This stall with herbs charmed me. The salesman wasn’t that charming. I rapidly took two pictures and he bitterly announced: ’10 euro per picture adds up to 20 euro’ and he wasn’t smiling. I quickly replied: ‘C’est un peu salé’ which means ‘That is too expensive’ or ‘You must be joking’, the latter with a negative connotation.  A literal translation would be ‘That is salted ‘ or ‘pickled’. It is a typical French expression. I’m sure he did not expect a tourist to reply in that manner, he quickly shut up. But then this tourist used to work in Paris.

Carpentras is gekend voor de provencaalse markt. Die bekleedt ongeveer gans het stadje. Ik was gecharmeerd door dit kraam met kruiden. De marktkramer was niet zo chamant. Ik nam vlug twee foto’s en hij snauwde: ’10 euro per foto betekent dat je mij 20 euro moet’. Hij was niet aan het grappen. Ik antwoordde snel en scherp: ‘C’est un peu salé’ wat betekent ‘Dat is gepeperd’ of ‘Dat is bij het haar gegrepen’, mijn antwoord met toch een duidelijke negatieve connotatie. Hij zweeg, ik denk niet dat hij zo’n antwoord van een toerist verwachtte. Maar ik werkte vroeger in Parijs en leerde daar arrogant zijn.

I asked MizzD when the best time of day was to take photos of the windmills in Kinderdijk. As the mills are just about all over the place, you can always find a good angle to take great photos. This one really shows the good colour saturation you can get if you respect the light and the position of the sun.

Ik vroeg MizzD wanneer je best foto's ging maken van de windmolens in Kinderdijk. Gezien je overal molens hebt kan je er zo goed als altijd goede foto's maken. Deze toont welke goede kleursaturatie je in de foto kan krijgen als je rekening houdt met de stand van de zon en je de juiste invalshoek op het onderwerp zoekt.
