An angel watches over the sisters Margaret and Agnes Wilson. Both sisters were followers of the Covenanters, an extreme Presbyterian group. Aged 18 and 13, both sister were arrested for their beliefs and sentenced to death by drowning. The 17th Century was not an easy time.

Een engel waakt over de zusters Margaret en Agnes Wilson. Beide zusers waren volgelingen van de Covenanters, een extereme Presbyteriane groep. Op de leeftijd van 18 en 13 werden beide zusters gearresteerd voor hun geloof en ter dood veroordeeld door verdrinking. De 17e eeuw was geen gemakkelijke tijd.

The cemetery in Stirling attracts a lot of visitors thanks to its good location high above the surrounding grounds with a good view on the river Forth. The site is considered a celebration to the establisment of Presbyterianism in Schotland.

Het kerkhof in Stirling is heel aantrekkelijk omwille van de hoge ligging die een goed zicht biedt om de lager gelegen gronden, met inbegrip van de rivier Forth. De site wordt aanzien als een viering van Presbyterianisme in Schotland.

Reed Nest

In Oudenburg, about 10 km from Oostende, near the motorway, you'll find this oasis of natural rest. It is called the swan corner. I has this observation tower from where you can spy on the birdlife. It is called Reed Nest and is built based on the nest of the warbler.

In Oudenburg, op 10 km van Oostende, nabij de E40 autoweg, vind je deze natuurlijke oase. Het is de zwaanhoek. Van op de observatietoren kan je er de watervogels bespieden. De observatietoren heet het rietnest en is nagebouwd naar het nest van de karekiet.

I cycled along the canal Nieuwpoort Plassendale two Sundays ago. Some pretty places to live alongside the canal.

Ik fietste langs het kanaal Nieuwpoort Plassendale twee zondagen terug. Je vindt daar enkele mooie plaatsen om te wonen.

Op de boerderij kan je je tegoed doen aan frisse plattelandslucht. Op deze boerderij zou je wel eens en overdosis kunnen opdoen.

Hotel Adamo

You don't find large hotels in Scotlands smaller cities. This last hotel we stayed at made us laugh because Adamo is a well known singer. The small hotel was very comfortable, except for the single glazing. It is situated along side a busy road. The restaurant was very nice as well offering traditional and exotic food.

In de kleinere steden in Schotland vind je geen grote hotels. Dit laatste hotel waar wij verbleven deed ons lachen omwille van de naam. Adamo is natuurlijk een bekende zanger. Het kleine hotel was heel comfortabel, alleen jammer van de enkele beglazing. Het lag aan een drukke straat. Het restaurant bood lekkere traditionele en exotische gerechten.

Gateway to the Highlands

Stirling has played an important role in Scotlands's history. Quite a few battles have taken place there. The city is known as the gateway to the Highlands. I quite liked this church and was offered a great cloudy background on this warm and sunny day in April 2010.

Stirling heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld in Schotland's geschiedenis. Veel veldslagen werden er uitgevochten. De stad staat bekend als de poort tot de hooglanden. Ik vond deze kerk best fotogeniek en was heel tevreden met de mooie wolkjes in de lucht. Een warme zonnige dag in april 2010.

I've been driving past this place for years. Drove to the back a couple of weeks ago to take a photo. Funny how these kind of derelict places remain without change.

Ik rijd al jaren voorbij dit gebouwtje. Een paar weken terug ging ik naar de achterkant om een foto te maken. Grappig hoe die verlaten bouwvallige plaatsen onaangeraakt blijven. Nochtans in het midden van een druk commercieel centrum.

The Way to the Station

I can actually see the facade of Brussels Central Station from the platform where I work. We don't have offices anymore, just open spaces. The roof of the parking tower across the street is no longer used for parking, solar pannels. Things evolve.

Ik kan de gevel van het Brusselse Centraal Station zien van op het plateau waar ik werk. Wij hebben al een tijdje geen kantoortjes meer, alleen open plekken. Het dak van de parkeertoren aan de overkant van de straat wordt niet meer gebruikt om te parkeren, zonnepanelen. Evolutie...

I have a colleague at work who likes everything gothic and celtic. She asked if she would enjoy Scotland, never having visited. I think so. Found this nice little piece on a garveyard along Kinlochleven.

Heb een collega die van alles houdt wat gothic en celtic is. Ze vroeg mij of zij Schotland zou kunnen appreciëren, ze is er nog nooit geweest. Ik twijfel daar niet aan. Dit kruisje vond ik op een kerkhof langsheen Kinlochleven.

We are not revisiting any places we already went to back in 2010 except for the Glencoe. The most beautiful valley in Scotland. There I want to spend just a bit more time this time around.

Wij gaan niet terug naar plaatsen die wij in 2010 al bezochten in Schotland, met uitzondering van de Glencoe. De mooiste vallei in Schotland wil ik toch nog eens zien en deze keer net wat meer de tijd nemen.

Diatomite

You can discover interesting sites in Scotland, like these ruins of a diatomite processing plant. Diatomite is a whitish clay like substance that has a wide range of industrial uses: insulation in boilers, filtration for beer, it is used in paints and polishers, but also as a stabilisor for dynamite. The stuff was mined and dried near Loch Cuithir and then transported 3 miles to this plant to be treated and shipped mostly to the heavy industry in Germany. This ruined plant closed back in 1914, just before the first World War.

Je kan heel wat interessante sites ontdekken in Schotland, zoals deze ruïnes van een diatomiet verwerkingsfabriek. Diatomiet is een wit klei-achtige mineraal dat ruime toepassingen heeft in de industire: isolatie in boilers, filtreren van bier, je vindt het in verven en beitsen, maar het dient ook als stabilisator in dynamiet.
Diatomiet werd opgegraven en gedroogd bij Loch Cuithir en dan over 3 mijl getransporteerd naar dit fabriekje waar het behandeld werd en verscheept naar de zware industrie in Duitsland. Deze geruïneerde fabriek sloot in 1914, net voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog.

Road to Eilean Donnan Castle

Our holiday destination for this summer has been decided. We will be revisiting Scotland. My wife and I had another destination in mind at first, but the kids decided they wanted to see Scotland. I don't mind, it is a great place.
We won't be revisiting Eilean Donnan Castle here in the picture, we saw that back in 2010. But we will be visiting Castle Urquhart along the bank of Loch Ness.

Onze vakantiebestemming voor deze zomer ligt vast. Wij gaan Schotland herbezoeken. Mijn vrouw en ik hadden een andere bestemming in gedachten, maar mijn kinderen beslisten dat zij Schotland wilden bezoeken. Ik heb daar niets op tegen, het is een fantastisch land.
Wij gaan Eilean Donnan Castle, hier in de foto, niet opnieuw bezoeken. Wij kwamen er al in 2010. Deze keer bezoeken wij Urquhart Castle langsheen de oever van Loch Ness.

Je kan ook een kasteel bezoeken. Dit is Kasteel De Blankaart in Woumen nabij Dikwmuide. Het is het startpunt van enkele mooie natuurwandelingen.

What I really appreciate about the Dutch in Maastricht is that they have tried to keep their streets authentic. Here in Belgium they would just cover up all of this beauty.

Wat ik echt apprecieer aan de Nederlanders in Maastricht is dat ze een poging gedaan hebben om hun straten authentiek te houden. Hier in België zouden ze dit gewoon verbergen/moderniseren.

The Stokstraat Quarter is one of the eldest parts of Maastricht. Little streets, no traffic, some art here and there. This funny work on the back terrace of a house.

Het Stokstraat Kwartier is een van de oudste gedeeltes van Maatricht. Kleine straatjes, pleintjes, geen verkeer. Hier en daar wat kunst. Dit grappige kunstwerk vond ik op het achterterras van een woning.
