Just outside the cemetery, the Star Pyramid dominates the skyline. This massive sandstone construction was commissioned in 1863 by William Drummond, a well known surveyor and nurseryman obsessed by the Presbytarian beliefs. He is also the sponsor of the martyrs monument and most of the statues of the heroes in the cemetery.

Net buiten het kerkhof domineert de Star Pyramide de skyline. Deze masieve zanstenen constructie werd door William Drummond, een bekende landmeter en planten kweker, in 1863 besteld. Het Presbyteriaanse geloof was voor hem een obsessie. Hij is ook de sponsor van het monument voor de martelaars die ik eergisteren postte en de beelden van de helden.

The statues proudly overlooking the cemetery are of heroes of the Scottish Presbyterian Reformation.

De beelden die met trotse blik de begraafplaats overzien zijn helden van de Schotse Presbyteriane Hervorming.

An angel watches over the sisters Margaret and Agnes Wilson. Both sisters were followers of the Covenanters, an extreme Presbyterian group. Aged 18 and 13, both sister were arrested for their beliefs and sentenced to death by drowning. The 17th Century was not an easy time.

Een engel waakt over de zusters Margaret en Agnes Wilson. Beide zusers waren volgelingen van de Covenanters, een extereme Presbyteriane groep. Op de leeftijd van 18 en 13 werden beide zusters gearresteerd voor hun geloof en ter dood veroordeeld door verdrinking. De 17e eeuw was geen gemakkelijke tijd.

I have a colleague at work who likes everything gothic and celtic. She asked if she would enjoy Scotland, never having visited. I think so. Found this nice little piece on a garveyard along Kinlochleven.

Heb een collega die van alles houdt wat gothic en celtic is. Ze vroeg mij of zij Schotland zou kunnen appreciëren, ze is er nog nooit geweest. Ik twijfel daar niet aan. Dit kruisje vond ik op een kerkhof langsheen Kinlochleven.

Don't know if you noticed this in my earlier panorama photo of the Vrijthof Square, but in the far corner there is this kitchy musical parade.

Ik weet niet of dit je eerder opviel in mijn panorame foto van het Vrijthof, maar in de verste hoek is er een kitcherige muzikale optocht.

No doubt whatsoever that this form of art is kitch.

The Stokstraat Quarter is one of the eldest parts of Maastricht. Little streets, no traffic, some art here and there. This funny work on the back terrace of a house.

Het Stokstraat Kwartier is een van de oudste gedeeltes van Maatricht. Kleine straatjes, pleintjes, geen verkeer. Hier en daar wat kunst. Dit grappige kunstwerk vond ik op het achterterras van een woning.

What do Birmingham UK and New York City USA have in common? A charging bull. The top version is the bull in front of the bull ring shopping center in Birmingham. The second version is the bull in the financial district in New York near Wall Street. The version in Birmingham looks like a cartoon version of the bull in New York.

Wat hebben Birmingham UK en New York City USA gemeen? Een aanvallende stier. De bovenste versie is de stier die voor de bull ring shopping center in Birmingham staat. De tweede foto is er eentje van de stier in het financiële kwartier in New York nabij Wall Steet. De stier in Birmingham ziet er eerder als een cartoon versie uit van die in New York.

I find these modern frescos pretty amazing in a shopping mall in the centre of Birmingham.

Ik vind deze moderne fresco's indrukwekkend in een winkelgalerij in het centrum van Birmingham.

When you get to the Charging Bull in Lower Manhattan, you know you have reached the financial district.
Originally a Christmas present to the city in 1989, it stood in front of the Stock Exchange. I has now been moved slightly and is a major tourist attraction. It was surrounded by more than 100 people when I got there early one sunny morning. The back end is as popular as the front, in particular with the Asians. The women like to hold something else than the horns.

Wanneer je de aanvallende stier bereikt in Lower Manhattan, dan weet je dat je aan het financiële kwartier bent.
Een kerstkado aan de stad in 1989, stond deze stier oorspronkelijk voor de beurs.
Sindsdien hebben ze het 3200 bronzen gevaarte ietwat verhuisd. Het is een geliefde toeristen attractie. Toen ik er kwam op een zonnige vroege ochtend, stonden er al meer dan 100 mensen om en rond. De achterkant van de stier, die expliciet uitgebeeld is, is even populair als de voorzijde. Zeker bij de Aziatische vrouwen, die houden precies graag iets anders vast dan de hoorns.

The lonely and cold seaman on top of the column proudly looks out to the sea looks ahead in his future. On the other side of the column at tround level another sailor mourns those lost to the sea. Behind the monument Arne Quinze's container art showing brightly through the snow storm. The white area in front of the photographer is in fact the beach.

De eenzame en koude zeeman bovenop de colon kijkt trots uit naar de zee en naar zijn toekomst. Aan de andere zijde van de zuil, met zijn twee voeten op de grond herdenkt een andere zeeman zij die verloren gingen aan de zee. Achter het monument Arne Quinze's container kunst die scherp contrasteert in de sneeuwstorm. Het witte gebied tussen de fotograaf en het monument is het strand.

Manmade Central Park counts a lot of fountains and sculptures. One of the bigger works is that of Alice in Wonderland, unveiled in 1959 as a gift by a local publisher.

Het kunstmatig aangelegde Central park telt veel fonteinen en beeldhouwwerken. Een van de grotere is dat van Alice in Wonderland dat in 1959 toegevoegd werd door een plaatselijke uitgever.

Christmas should be about peace on earth, shouldn't it? One of the biggest peace activist of our times was of course Johny Lennon.
When I was in New York I could not not go to Strawberry Fields in Central Park. John's wife Yoko Ono scattered his ashes there after he was murdered in 1980. John and Yoko lived in the Dakota building very nearby this spot. I was not alone visiting the Imagine memorial, it is just as popular as the final resting place of Jim Morisson in Paris.
The mosaic in Portugese pavement style was a gift from the Italian city of Naples.
Yoko Ono, who still lives in the Dakota Apartments today, donated more than a million dollars to scape the park known as Strawberry Fields. It contains 161 different plant types, symbolizing the countries of the world.
I have replaced the gray path the mosaic is embedded in and the surrounding people by some flower power.

Wanneer ik onlangs in New York was, kon ik niet voorbij Strawberry Fields gaan in Central Park. John's vrouw Yoko Ono strooide er zijn as uit nadat hij vermoord werd in 1980. John en Yoko woonden in het Dakota gebouw, je kan het zien van in het park.
Ik was niet alleen op deze plek, het is net zo populair als de laaste rustplaats van Jim Morisson in Parijs.

In New York's Natural History Museum they have found an original way to decorate the tree.

In het Natuurhistorisch museum in New York vonden ze een originele manier om de boom te versieren.

This installation between 21^st  and 22^nd West is still under construction. Ghana-born artist El Anatsui uses recycled materials from near his homecountry of Nigeria for his works. Here he is using recycled tin and mirrors. The whole idea is that the work fits in to its surroundings and reflects them. This is a reconstruction of a work of art that was shown at the 2012 Paris Triennale.

Deze installatie tussen 21e en 22e West is nog in de maak. De in Ghana geboren artiest El Anatsui gebruikt recyclagemateriaal die hij in zijn thuisland Nigeria verzamelt. Hier gaat het om spiegels en gerecycleerde tin. Het concept is dat het werk in haar omgeving moet passen en de omgeving moet reflecteren. Dit is een reconstructie van het werk dat hij tijdens de 2012 Triënnale in Parijs toonde.

Another fine example of art adding value to the street view. An elsewise pretty drab and ordinary street corner is turned into an attraction where people take photos of or just stop to admire. You’ll find comfortable benches all along the High Line.

Nog een mooi voorbeeld van straatkunst die waarde toevoegt. Een anders ordinaire en saaie straathoek wordt omgetoverd tot een attractie waar mensen foto’s van nemen of gewoon stoppen om dit te bewonderen. Zitbankjes vind je overal langsheen de High Line.

The High Line appeals to tourists and native New Yorkers. Artists have come to see it as an open air museum for their art. Along the High Line you’ll find a lot of art like this gigantic wall painting. Graffiti on a large scale.

De High Line trekt veel volk, zowel toeristen als New Yorkers. Artiesten zijn het dan ook beginnen zien als een openluchtmuseum voor hun kunst. Zo vind je langsheen de lijn heel veel kunstwerken zoals deze gigantische muurschilderij. Graffiti groots gezien.

There is this chocolate maker in Oostende who always decorates his shop window for Halloween. It is difficult to take a picture because you are photographing through glass. Plus that his window is usually dark for the Halloween atmosphere, and the sun was shining brightly on the apartment buildings on the other side of the street. But I managed to get a decent picture of these three cuties.

Er is een chocolademaker in Oostende die zijn vitrine altijd mooi decoreert voor Halloween. Moeilijk om er een foto van te maken omdat je door glas fotografeert. Daarbij is zijn vitrine natuurlijk donker voor de Halloween sfeer en de zon scheen hard op de apartementsgebouwen aan de overkant van de straat: zware reflectie, dus. Maar ik slaagde er in een deftige foto te maken van deze drie mooitjes.

The bikini clad breasts are actually promoting real estate. What is behind this? This building is being finished behind the gigantic installation know as the Rock Strangers. Some say that those apartments aren't worth their money because they don't enjoy the full sea view, it is hindered by the bashed red containers know as the Rock Strangers. So the promotor has to do an extra effort to sell the apartments.

De in bikini gehulde borsten maken reklame voor vastgoed. Wat steekt daar achter? Dit gebouw in afwerking bevindt zich achter de gigantische installatie die bekend staat als de Rock Strangers. Sommigen beweren dat deze apartementen hun geld niet waard zijn omdat ze niet genieten van het volle uitzicht op zee, het zeezicht wordt gehinderd door de gigantische installatie die bekend staat als de Rock Strangers. I managed to secure the last seat in the first class carriage of the 17:00 train out of Brussels Central last Monday. A lot of people had to stand. In Brussels South more people boarded to the prospect of stretching their legs, sitting on the floor or standing on each other's toes. I'm going to help the mobility crisis a little, I will try to work one day per week from home.

Afgelopen maandag op de trein van 17:00 uit Brussel Centraal, die uiteraard te laat was, slaagde ik er in de laatste zetel in de eerste klasse wagon te bezetten. Veel minder snelle wezens moesten recht staan. In Brussel Zuid stapte nog een klein leger volk op dat verder de benen moest strekken, op de vloer plaats moest nemen of op elkaar's tenen staan. Ik ga de mobiliteitscrisis een handje helpen. Vanaf nu probeer ik 1 dag per week van thuis uit te werken.

This heavily damaged statue of Christ was found in Beaune. I like it, somehow it symbolises the martyrdom of the Christ story. Not that I am a believer, by the way.

Dit zwaar beschadigde Christusbeeld wer in Beaune gevonden. Ik houd er wel van, het staat precies symbool voor het martelaarschap van Christus. Niet dat ik een gelover ben, tussen haakjes.

Continuing on our tour of macabre discoveries, we guessed the museum for religious art in Dijon would be a good place to discover some spine chilling relics and that kind of stuff. Or some form of medieval religious torture. But we found the museum to be quite clean of such artifacts. This painting rather makes you think.

Onze tour van macabere ontdekkingen verder zettend, leek het museum voor religieuze kunst ons een goede plaats om enkele bloedstollende relikwieën en dergelijke te ontdekken. Of een of andere vorm van middeleeuwse religieuze foltering. Maar het museum bleek nogal steriel te zijn van dergelijke attributen. Dit schilderij deed mij wel even nadenken.

I'm sure that I've posted photos of work by Rodin here before. In the arts museum in Dijon I discovered this bronze of Venus by him. Beautiful!

Ik weet zeker dat ik hier eerder al foto's postte van de kunst van Rodin. In het museum voor schone kunsten in Dijon ontdekte ik dit bronzen beeld van Venus. Prachtig!

Arne Quinze's work of art 'Rock Strangers' remains a controversial item here in Oostende. The work, having cost 484.000 euro stands on the seafront near the monument honoring the seamen. I pointed it out to a colleague a little while ago and her reaction was: 'When are they going to unpack the art?'. There is a strong movement in our fair town to remove the work, a petition was signed by a lot of dislikers of the work. We have local elections scheduled for October 14th, this is one of the items that are being used as an argument against the current town council.

Arne Quinze's kunstwerk 'Rock Strangers' blijft een controversieel item hier in Oostende. Het werk dat 484.000 euro kostte staat op de zeedijk op het Zeeheldenplein. Ik toonde het van op het staketsel onlangs aan een collega en haar reactie was: 'Wanneer gaan ze het uitpakken?'. Er is een sterke beweging ontstaan om het werk te verwijderen, een groot aantal tegenstanders ondertekenden een petitie. Op 14 oktober moeten wij naar de stembus voor de gemeenteraad, dit werk is een van de items die zwaar misbruikt wordt in de stemmingmakerij naar de verkiezingen toe.

We were having a quiet drink on the central square in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, when colourful troups invaded the square. We then discovered that we were in the middle of the yearly Edelweiss folklore festival. I couldn’t help noticing that one girl was showing a bit more leg than the rest of the troup and that her underskirt was bordered with little thrills.

We genoten van een drankje op de centrale plaats in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, toen kleurrijke figuren de binnenplaats kwamen bezetten. Wij ontdekten dat wij middenin het jaarlijkse Edelweiss folklore festival terecht gekomen waren. Ik merkte op dat één van de dansende meisjes was meer been toonde dan de rest en dat haar onderrok gezoomd was met versierinkjes.

I started reading again just before I went on holiday. And now I’m proud that after having read several works by Japanese author Haruki Murakami, I have now managed to wrestle through his trilogy 1q84. One of his more commercial works, I found it pretty easy reading.

Net voor ik in vakantie vertrok begon ik terug te lezen. En nu ben ik er trots op dat ik, na verschillende werken van Japanse auteur Haruki Murakami verorberd te hebben, ik door zijn trilogie 1q84 geworsteld ben. Een van zijn meer commerciële werken, ik vond het vlot lezen.
