I can actually see the facade of Brussels Central Station from the platform where I work. We don't have offices anymore, just open spaces. The roof of the parking tower across the street is no longer used for parking, solar pannels. Things evolve.

On the way to work a week ago on the streets of Brussels. Someone is missing something.

Op weg naar het werk een goede week geleden in de straten van Brussel. Iemand mist wellicht iets.

Heard the yearly flower carpet was laid out on the central market place in Brussels, so on the way to the office yesterday morning I passed by to take a picture.

Ik hoorde dat het jaarlijkse bloementapijt op de Grote Markt in Brussel lag, dus gisterenmorgen op de weg naar kantoor passeerde ik er om een foto te maken.

Arriving near my office building two Mondays ago, I discovered this strange construction on the newly paved Munt Sqaure. Some contraption to teach kids about architecture. Luckily I took a photo with my BlackBerry, because by the evening it was gone.

Toen ik twee maandagen terug aan mijn kantoorgebouw arriveerde vond ik op het gerenoveerde Muntplein deze contrutie. Een ding om de kinderen wat bij te brengen over architectuur. Ik nam een foto met mijn BlackBerry. En gelukkig maar, want tegen de avond was het terug weg.

I was just about to have my weekly 121 with my boss when the fire drill was called through the speakers. As the Place de la Monnaie is still undergoing its transformation, we had to evacuate the the Martyr Square a bit further down. Terrible photos using my iPad, but I found it funny that the crowd that filled the square actually hindered our core business, as you can see in the second photo.

Ik ging net mij wekelijkse 121 met mijn overste aanvangen toen de brandoefening aangekondigd werd door de luidsprekers. Gezien het Muntplein nog in volle transformatie is, moesten wij naar het Martelarenplein evacueren, enkele stappen verder. Vreselijk slechte foto's maakt die iPad, maar ik vond het grappig dat het talrijk aanwezige publiek het plein vulde en zo onze core business hinderde. Zoals je in de tweede foto kunt zien.

The building on the left side of the street in yesterday's photo is the Grand Synagogue in Brussels. I tried to get in completely in the picture here, but is wasn't easy. I've been taking photo's with my BlackBerry again.

Het gebouw aan de linkerzijde in de foto van gisteren is de Grote Synagoge in Brussel. Ik moest een inspanning doen om het hier volledig op de foto te krijgen, niet gemakkelijk. Ik ben weer foto's met mijn BlackBerry aan het maken.

As you can see by this photo taken from the top of the 'Arts Hill' in Brussels, the day started nice and sunny when I headed for my training.

Zoals je kan zien in deze foto, genomen van boven op de Kusntberg, startte de dag mooi en zonnig toen ik naar mijn opleiding ging.

Two days of training near the Poelaert Square in Brussels last week, very close to the courts of justice. It is an elevated part of Brussels, this artwork of a hot air balloon is near the balcony of the square, you can just see the basilica in the background.

Twee dagen in opleiding nabij het Poelaert Plein in Brussel de afgelopen week. Zeer dicht bij het gerechtshof. Dat is natuurlijk het hoge gedeelte van Brussel aan de rand van de Marollen. Leuk kunstwerkje van een luchtballon nabij het balkon. In de achtergrond zie je de Basiliek van Koekelberg.

Something that has been keeping my thoughts busy for a while now: time and trains. Obviously because they don't seem to run on time very often. Offboarding at Brussels North station last week I managed to get a shot combining both. My train was nearly on time.

Iets dat mij al een tijdje bezigh houdt: tijd en treinen. Die rijden dikwijls niet volgens schema. Toen ik vorig week afstapte in Brussel Noord maakte ik een foto die beide elementen combineert. Mijn trein was dan bijna op tijd.

Like so many Belgians I decided to break with our traditional energy company. In the hands of the French Suez concern now, they don't seem to have understood that the market is now free and that Belgians can choose their energy supplier. The difference in price between this past monopolist and some small providers on the market is substantial. I hope they understand the message and have the agility to adapt.

Zoals zo veel Belgen besloot ik om te breken met onze traditionele energieleverancier.Thans in Franse handen, de Suez groep, lijken zij niet te hebben begrepen dat de Belgen tot het besef gekomen zijn dat zij hun energieleverancier kunnen kiezen. En het verschil in prijs tussen de vroegere monopolist en concurrerende kleinere aanbieders is substantieel. Ik hoop dat zij de boodschap finaal begrijpen en dat ze de flexibiliteit tonen om zich tijdig aan te passen.

The view from my office last winter. It is spring now but the sometimes still cold mornings remind me of winter.

Het zicht van uit mijn kantoor vorige winter. Het is nu lente, maar de nog steeds koude ochtends doen mij terug aan de winter denken.

The walk to the central station in Brussels last Friday was covered in snow. The streets were just about deserted. Traffic froze.

De wandeling naar het centraal station in Brussel afgelopen vrijdag was er een door de sneeuw. De straten waren verlaten. Het verkeer bevroor tot stilstand.

On days that are not Friday December 30th, these platforms are much more crowded at 19:20. Even at 22:00.

Op dagen die niet vrijdag 30 december zijn, staat toch wat meer volk op deze perrons om 19u20. Zelfs nog om 22u.

When I arrived in the Horta Gallery connecting to Brussels Central Station around 19:15, I noticed a lot of colourful figures signing in for the 7km Brussels Corrida. A run through the heart of the city passing along the Christmas market and the important attractions of the centre.

Toen ik 's avonds omstreeks 19u15 in de Horta Galerij arriveerde, om door te wandelen naar het Centraal Station, vond ik er een grote groep kleurrijke figuren. Ze tekenden er in voor de Manneke Pis Corrida van 7km. Een looptocht doorheen het standscentrum langsheen de Kerstmarkt op de Grande Place en andere toeristische attracties.

2 december a national demonstration was held in our capital Brussels. Trade Unions protesting against the new government's plans to improve the country's financial situation. Some reflecton in the window as I took it from the coffee corner at work on the 12th floor.

De nationale demontratie van 2 december in Brussel. De vakbonden riepen op om te protesteren tegen de maatregelen van de nieuwe regering met een financiële impact. Heb dit door het raam van de coffee corner op 't werk moeten maken op de twaalfde verdieping, dus toch wat reflectie.

Yesterday brought the première of Spielberg's Tintin film to Brussels. A cinema just across the street from my office building isn the place. Paris and London battled for the première, but as Tintin was Born in Brussels fathered by Belgian artist Hergé, it simply had to be Brussels.

Gisteren ging in Brussel de première van Spielberg's Kuifje film door. De UCG cinema, aan de overkant van de straat van mijn kantoorgebouw, was de plaats. Parijs en Londen vochten voor die première, maar gezien Kuifje in Brussel geboren werd met Hergé als vader, moest het natuurlijk Brussel zijn.

Just about a week or two ago I visited Toyota's HQ in Brussels. Next to the reception stood a hybrid car. The whole presentation shows that they seek a clean image, the environment is important. The reception area boasted a lot of awards, including this nice piece. I got out my BlackBerry and took a shot.

Zowat een week of twee geleden bezocht ik Toyota's hoofdkwartier in Brussel. Ter hoogde van het onthaal stond een hybride wagen. De uistraling die ze nalaten is er een van zorg voor het milieu. In het wachthoekje stonden ook veel awards, met inbegrip van dit mooie beeldje. Ik waagde mij nog eens aan een BlackBerry foto.

I did 3 posts back in 2009 about the comic book murals in Brussels. I discovered another one two weeks ago, when I was walking through Brussels on e morning. Funny, because the building to the left of the mural used to be the main office of a former employer of mine. The character in this mural is Yoko Tsuno, a Japanese woman that get involved in all kinds of science fiction mysteries.

In 2009 deed ik een post of 3 over de stripverhalen muurschilderijen in Brussel. Toen ik ene week of 2 terug 's morgens door Brussel wandelde, ontdekte ik er nog eentje: Yoko Tsuno deze keer. Grappig om dat hier terug te vinden. Het gebouw links van de schilderij werd vroeger gebruikt door een ex-werkgever van mij. Heb daar nog enige uurtjes doorgebracht. Voor wie de strips van Yoko Tsuno niet kent: een Japanse die allerhande science fiction avonturen beleeft.

My first reaction when seeing this mural in Brussels is that the top of this place looks better than the ground floor. Perhaps this is what the owner dreams of.

Mijn eerste reactie wanneer in deze muurschilderij zie in Brussel is dat de bovenkant van dit gebouw er beter uit ziet dan de gelijkvloerse verdieping. Misschien is dit waar de eigenaar van droomt.

I couldn't help noticing that a building was being torn down between the South and Central station in Brussels, just alongside the railway track. So one sunny morning I deceded to go and take a picture before heading for the office. This must be just about the third stage of the demolition: two layers inwards. Only the centre column of the building is left standing.

Ik merkte op dat een gebouw afgebroken werd tussen het zuid- en centraal station in Brussel, een gebouw dat langs de spoorweg stond. Dus op een zonnige morgen besloot ik wat foto's te gaan maken vooraleer ik naar kantoor ging. Dit is volgens mij het derde niveau van de afbraak: twee lagen inwaards, dus. Enkel het centraal colom van het gebouw staat hier nog overeind.

These colourful balloons have been decorating the roof of the Saint-Hubert Gallery for more than a week now. A nice decorative touch.

Deze ballons versieren het dak van de Sint-Hubertus Galerij nu al meer dan een week. Mooie decoratie!

I’ll close this series with a combination of Cellograff art and the creative use of old videotapes. I remain to find the latter messy, but this is the best combination I found on the market. Tourists can enjoy a drink across the street here.

Ik sluit deze reeks met een combinatie van Cellograff kunst en het creatief gebruik van oude videobanden. Ik blijf het laatste nogal rommelachtig vinden, maar dit is de beste combinatie die ik op de Grasmarkt vond. Toeristen kunnen van een drankje genieten aan de andere kant van de straat.

Ik was gek op het liedje ‘Birdhouse in your Soul’ van de groep ‘They Might be Giants’.
Hier hebben de artiesten een vogelhuisje gebouwd met oude videobanden met inbegrip van de doos.

Don’t know if you noticed that 3 girls were hiding behind the Cellograff work of art? But they cannot remain hidden from me, I went to take a picture of the other side of the non-permanent graffiti, and caught them hiding.

Viel het jullie op dat 3 meisjes zich verschuilden achter het Cellograff kunstwerk? Maar om zich voor mij te verschuilen moeten ze vroeger opstaan. Ik ging aan de andere zijde van deze niet-permanente vorm van graffiti een foto maken en fotografeerde hun spelletje verstoppertje.

Cellograff is a form of art believed to have been invented in Paris. Garbage wrapping plastic is suspended between pillars or trees and graffiti artists spraypaint the surface. It does not have a permanent character and hence is not vandalism. Sympathetic!

Cellograff is een kunstvorm die naar vermoeden het levenslicht zag in Parijs. Afval verpakkingsplastiek wordt er tussen pilaren of bomen gespannen en graffiti kunstenaars beschilderen het gefabriceerde vlak. Het heeft geen permanente karakter en is bijgevolg geen vorm van vandalisme. Sympathiek!
