Went to the park. The flow clock was still pretty naked. And that for April 28.

Ging naar het Park. Het bloemenuurwerk lag er nog redelijk naakt bij. En dat voor 28 april.

I've been driving past this place for years. Drove to the back a couple of weeks ago to take a photo. Funny how these kind of derelict places remain without change.

Ik rijd al jaren voorbij dit gebouwtje. Een paar weken terug ging ik naar de achterkant om een foto te maken. Grappig hoe die verlaten bouwvallige plaatsen onaangeraakt blijven. Nochtans in het midden van een druk commercieel centrum.

As you can see, Oostende's biggest tourist attraction, the fisherman's quay is pretty deserted. Apart from a couple of fellow snow walkers.

Zoals je kan zien is Oostende's grootste toeristenattractie, de visserskaai, redelijk verlaten. Behalve nog een koppel sneeuwwandelaars.

On the way back to the car, we passed the fish market, which was pretty deserted. There weren't many people around in general. I like walking in a snow storm, it is not something you can do every day in Oostende.

Op de weg terug naar de auto passeerden wij de verlaten vistrap. Er waren in het algemeen niet veel mensen op de been. Ik hou wel van een wandeling in een sneeuwstorm, je maakt het niet elke dag mee in Oostende.

Just before Halloween Oostende harbour looked pretty empty. Just the platform waiting to take another piece of windmill out to sea.

Net voor Halloween zag de haven van Oostende er redelijk leeg uit. Enkel het ponton dat wacht om nog een stuk windmolen naar zee te brengen.

The bikini clad breasts are actually promoting real estate. What is behind this? This building is being finished behind the gigantic installation know as the Rock Strangers. Some say that those apartments aren't worth their money because they don't enjoy the full sea view, it is hindered by the bashed red containers know as the Rock Strangers. So the promotor has to do an extra effort to sell the apartments.

De in bikini gehulde borsten maken reklame voor vastgoed. Wat steekt daar achter? Dit gebouw in afwerking bevindt zich achter de gigantische installatie die bekend staat als de Rock Strangers. Sommigen beweren dat deze apartementen hun geld niet waard zijn omdat ze niet genieten van het volle uitzicht op zee, het zeezicht wordt gehinderd door de gigantische installatie die bekend staat als de Rock Strangers. When I saw this when I was taking pictures of the Rock Strangers. Can you guess what these young lady's attributes are promoting?

Ik zag dit wanneer ik foto's van de Rock Strangers maakte. Kan je raden waarvoor deze jonge dame's attrituben reklame voor maken?

Earlier this week I revisited the Rock Strangers to take some pictures just before the sun went under.

Begin deze week bezocht ik nog eens de Rock Strangers net voor zonsondergang.

Arne Quinze's work of art 'Rock Strangers' remains a controversial item here in Oostende. The work, having cost 484.000 euro stands on the seafront near the monument honoring the seamen. I pointed it out to a colleague a little while ago and her reaction was: 'When are they going to unpack the art?'. There is a strong movement in our fair town to remove the work, a petition was signed by a lot of dislikers of the work. We have local elections scheduled for October 14th, this is one of the items that are being used as an argument against the current town council.

Arne Quinze's kunstwerk 'Rock Strangers' blijft een controversieel item hier in Oostende. Het werk dat 484.000 euro kostte staat op de zeedijk op het Zeeheldenplein. Ik toonde het van op het staketsel onlangs aan een collega en haar reactie was: 'Wanneer gaan ze het uitpakken?'. Er is een sterke beweging ontstaan om het werk te verwijderen, een groot aantal tegenstanders ondertekenden een petitie. Op 14 oktober moeten wij naar de stembus voor de gemeenteraad, dit werk is een van de items die zwaar misbruikt wordt in de stemmingmakerij naar de verkiezingen toe.

Our station is undergoing renovation. It looks wrapped up. A station means travel. I'm away for a short while. Not that anybody needs to get any bad ideas, my house is being lived in while I'm not there :-)

Ons station ondergaat renovatie. Het is precies verpakt. Een station symboliseert reizen. Ik trek er voor een korte tijd van onder. Niet dat iemand slechte gedachten moet krijgen, mijn huis blijft wel bewoond terwijl ik er niet ben :-)

This new apartment building overlooks the fisherman's quay.

Dit nieuwe apartements gebouw geeft zicht op de visserskaai.

Monumental is the entry to the apartment building Beau Site (Beautiful Site). You can see the sea reflected in the mirror on the wall behind the glass doors.

Monumentaal is de toegang tot het apartementsgebouw Beau Site. Je kan de reflectie van de zee zien in de spiegel aan de muur achter de glazen deuren.

I like the way the pretty evening sky is reflected in the windows of the casino.

Ik hou van de manier waarop de avondlucht gereflecteerd wordt in de vensters van het casino.

The modern construction to the right is the hotel Andromeda. In the middle of the composition the casino with the restaurant Ostend Queen on top, giving a great view over the beach and the sea.

De moderne constructie rechts in de compositie is het hotel Andromeda. In het midden van de compositie het casino met het restaurant Ostend Queen bovenop. Dit restaurant geeft een prachtig zicht over het strand en de zee.

Little of the old villas left in Oostende. They have made room for some more modern form of constructions. Not always prettier.

Weinig oude villa's schieten er nog over in Oostende. Ze maakten plaats voor modernere constructies. Daarom niet altijd mooier.

I didn't actually go in the former top restaurant, but the evening sun was shining in through the window on the first floor, so I got an idea of the decorations inside.

Ik ging niet binnen in dit voormalige top restaurant, maar de zon verlichtte door het raam op de eerste verdieping de versieringen aan de binnenzijde.

The seafront isn't finished yet, the pavement is still under construction. Should be finished in 10 days time, when they inaugurate this work of art. Someone said that the artists smashed up some red containers.

De zeedijk is nog niet af, de klinkers worden nog geplaatst. Dit zou binnen 10 dagen afgewerkt moeten zijn, want dan wordt dit kunstwerk ingewijd. Iemand merkte op dat de artiest een verzameling rode containers deukte.

Arne Quinze's rock strangers, aangekocht door de stad Oostende om de heraangelegde zeedijk te decoreren. Ze ziet ze van ver. Ik vond dat ze mooi pasten in deze oranjerode zonsondergang.

Belgian visitors to my blog may have read in the press that a fishing boat took a wrong turn when it was to be hauled out of the water for maintenance. Salvaging the vessel seems to be a bit of a problem.

Mijn Belgische bezoekers hebben wellicht in de pers gelezen dat een vissersboot een verkeerde draai nam toen het uit het water gehaald moest worden voor een onderhoudsbeurt. Het vaartuig bergen lijkt een probleem te zijn. Roy's foto's zijn beter dan die van mij, ik had een beetje last van overlast van de zon om de tweede foto goed te krijgen.

Tuesday morning May 29, 6:30 am, a beautiful morning and this ship is getting ready to sail away. The square in front of the railway station was rather smoky.

Dinsdag morgen 29 mei, 6u30, een prachtige morgen en dit schip maakt zich klaar om naar volle zee te trekken. Het pein voor het station was rokerig.

Not just boats to brighten up the atmosphere in our town during the past extemely sunny weekend, but also some British Steam Machines. Great crew, fun guys.

Niet enkel boten om de sfeer er in te brengen in het zonovergoten Oostende het afgelopen weekeinde, maar ook enkele Britse stoommachines. Fantatische benamming, leuke kerels.

Not just the old vessels attracted my attention, this Buzzi 42 Rib got caught on my lens as well. I'm not too pleased with the composition, but I caught the vessel as it was turning in to port. Beneath the vessel is the messy end of the quay, so I left that out of the composition. This craft is capable of doing 70 knots that is about the landspeed equivalent of 120 km/hour. This type of vessel is often used by armed forces.

Niet enkel de oude vaartuigen trokken mij aandacht, deze Buzzi 42 Rib moest ik toch ook vastleggen. Ik ben niet zo blij met de compositie van deze foto, maar ik zag het vaartuig te laat en moest de foto maken terwijl ze de haven binnendraaide. Aan de onderkant van de boot had ik de rommelige havenmuur mee in de compositie, heb dat er afgeknipt. Dit vaartuig kan tot 70 knopen halen, wat overeenstemt met zo'n 120 km/u landsnelheid. Dit type boot wordt vaak voor militaire doeleinde gebruikt.

I've just finished reading 'Burnt Shadows' by Indian author Kamila Shamsie. An interesting family history spanning from the end of WWII to Afghanistan in 2001. It ends in the USA market by 9/11.

Wij zeilden vorig jaar uit met dit vaartuig: de Morgenster. Gezien ik dit naar niet met haar in zee trok, kon ik deze foto van haar maken terwijl ze de haven binnen voer.
Ik heb net 'Burnt Shadows' van de Indiase schrijfster Kamila Shamsie uitgelezen. Een interessante familiegeschiedenis die start op het einde van WOII en eindigt in Afghanistan in 2001. En in een USA getekend door de naweeën van 9/11.

This weekend Oostende welcomes "Oostende at Anker", the authentic ships happening. Steam is this year's theme. And this little tug made a lot of that and a lot of noise entering the port last Thursday.

Dit weekeinde is er terug "Oostende voor Anker", het authentieke schip gebeuren. Stoom is dit jaar het thema. En deze kleine schuit produceerde er veel ook veel lawaai wanneer het de haven binnen voer afgelopen donderdag.

Last weekend saw yet another edition of the kite festival in Oostende. I got there at 16:00 on the Sunday afternoon, which is not a good idea because it is just about finished then. But I still managed to enjoy the good weather and get a few shots. 

Vorig weekeinde zag nog maar eens een editie van het vliegerfestival in Ootende. Ik geraakte er om 16u de zondag namiddag, wat geen goed idee is, dan is het zo ongeveer afgelopen. Maar ik slaagde er toch in van het goede weer te genieten en een paar foto's te maken. Langsheen onze kust kan je geen foto's nemen zonder er de onvermijdelijke bouwkranen op te vereeuwigen. Maar dat eeuwige lijkt precies een realiteit te zijn.

The sad news came that the New Year's dip could not take place again, this is the second time our town tried to organize it this month. We've just been having too bad weather. With the strong wind, it is too difficult to guarantee the safety of the participants. So I need to illustrate this with some photos I took during one of the previous editions. You can see the crowd scattered on the beach getting ready for the dip in the first photo. The girl in the second photo merits my admiration. She has just come out of the water and she needs nothing to keep her warm but her bathing costume and a can of soft drink. A bit of a contrast with the last photo, in particular the young woman with the fur hat. Better luck next year.

Afgelopen weekeinde het triestige nieuws dat de nieuwjaarsduik definitief afgelast wordt. Dit was de tweede keer dat Oostende de duik probeerde te organiseren deze maand. Gewoon te slecht weer. Door de sterke wind kan de veiligheid van de deelnemers moeilijk gegarandeerd worden. Dit moet ik dit bericht illustreren met enkele foto's die ik tijdens een vorige editie nam. In de eerste foto zie je de deelnemers die zich voorbereiden op het strand. Bewondering voor het meisje in de tweede foto. Ze komt net uit het water en heeft niets nodig om warm te krijgen, buiten haar badpak en haar blikje fris. Een scherp contrast met de deelnemers in de derde foto, in het bijzonder de jonge vrouw met haar bontmuts. Volgend jaar meer geluk, hoop ik.

The day before yesterday brought terrible gale force winds. You can see the sand blowing over the beach, it blows onto the dike and collects there. There was a fear that the dikes would not hold the sea water, so the fire brigade decided to install the mobile wall to stop the water from crossing the top of the dike. Behind this dike lies the lowest area of the town that was often flooded at high tide in the past. They have renewed the dike recently and the beach in front of it is artificial to hold back the water. Surprises me that they need to install a mobile wall now, I would have thought the previous arrangement with the permanent wall was more efficient, less work.

Eergisteren bracht erge rukwinden. Je ziet hoe het losse zand over het strand waait en op de zeedijk verzamelt. Er was vrees dat de dijken het zeewater niet zouden terughouden, dus de brandweer besliste van de mobiele waterkeringsmuur te installeren. Achter deze muur bevindt zich het laagst gelegen gedeelte van de stad dat in het verleden vaak te kampen kreeg met overstromingen. Het verwondert mij dat er nu een mobiele muur geplaatst moet worden. De dijk werd onlangs vernieuwd, voorheen was er een permanente waterkeringsmuur. De nood om nu een mobiele versie te installeren lijkt mij veel werk.

Jantje is a 28 metre long schooner that started life in 1930 as a fishing boat. Currently owned by a Dutchman, it was previously owned by the captain of the Morgenster, the boat in which I took to sea back in May. When finishing this photo I noticed that you can see the port of Zeebrugge in the background. This isn't at all bad as the distance between the two towns is about 28 kilometer.

Jantje is een 28 meter lange schoener die het levenslicht zag als een vissersboot in 1930. Thans eigendom van een Nederlander, daarvoor het bezit van Harry Muter, de kapitein van de Morgenster waarmee ik in mei ter zee trok. Bij het afwerken van deze foto merkte ik op dat je in de achtergrond de haven van Zeebrugge ziet. Dat is verre van slecht gezien Zeebrugge en Oostende toch 28 kilometer uit elkaar liggen.

This schooner also started life as a fishing vessel, herring fishing back in 1916. Dutch owned it now serves as a training and passenger vessel sailing the Channel, the North Sea and the East Sea. It was built for speed. This picture shows you how rough the sea was that day, those boats really rocked. This is a photo from the authentic ships event in Oostende back in May.

Deze schoener starte het leven ook als een visserboot, een haringvisser in 1916. In Nederlandse handen doet ze nu dienst als een opleidings- en passagiersschip die vooral het Kanaal, de Noordzee en de Oostzee bevaart. Dit schip werd gebouwd voor snelheid. Deze foto toont je hoe karaktervol de zee wel was die dag, de neuzen staken diep en rezen hoog. Dit is nog een foto van 'Oostende voor Anker', mei 2011.

The summer festivals are starting up. I haven't had a look at the programming for the Gent Festival yet, but our own Paulusfeesten that will take place in August, features Killer Queen again, a great cover group fronted by a Freddy Mercury look-alike. I delved into my archives and found that it was back in 2005 that they surprised us for the first time with their act. That was a great summer. My eldest kid was 15 and enjoyed his first taste of the festivities. I had just come back from working in France.

De zomer festivals starten terug. Het programma van de Gentse Feesten heb ik nog niet bekeken, maar onze eigen Paulusfeesten die in augustus doorgaan, verwelkomen opnieuw Killer Queen. Een fantastische cover groep die voorgegaan wordt door een Freddy Mercury look-alike. Ik greep in mijn archieven en ontdekte dat het zo lang geleden als 2005 was dat ze op de Paulusfeesten optraden. Dat was een fantastische zomer. Mijn oudste zoon werd 15 en genoot van zijn eerste keer op de feesten. Ik was net terug van mijn professioneel avontuur in Frankrijk.
